The 2015 Best Of TV Awards are about to start the Finals soon. The 6th annual BOTVA's are still closing out some polls for the run off round before we advance to the finals. We've already shattered the previous record for votes in the first round combined. With over 487,000 votes. The 2015 BOTVA's all time record of 575,000 votes in a year. The Semi-Final rounds for Favorite TV Program, Favorite TV Character, Best Couple categories took place a couple weeks ago. Second and third were newcomers to the finals The 100 and Person of Interest. Other newcomers to the finals that were not there last year include How To Get Away With Murder, Daredevil, iZombie & Greys Anatomy. Not making the finals this year who were there last were Castle, Sherlock, Murdoch Mysteries, Doctor Who, The Flash, The Big Bang Theory. The Favorite TV Character Category is always possibly one of the most sought titles here. This year seems to be no different as 3 finalists got over the 1000 vote mark and another was close. Defending champion Felicity Smoak from "Arrow" finds herself fending off challenges from three "Person Of Interest" challengers (would have been more if it werent for the new rule about a maximum of 3 candidates in a category from any show). Root, aka - Samantha Groves (the 2015 May Madness character winner) led voting barely over her co-star Sameen Shaw. Harold Finch, another POI character finished 4th not far behind. Only 4 people left from the first ever Favorite Character Finals that are eligible, and all 4 of them, for a 4th consecutive year still find themselves in the finals. 3 time winner Dean Winchester, along with his co-star Castiel from "Supernatural", as well as Bo Dennis "Lost Girl" and Richard Castle "Castle" all managed spots in the finals again. With the list expanding from 40 to 55 names this year, there was a lot of newcomers to the finals. Most notably Sameen Shaw in 2nd & Harold Finch in 4th from Person Of Interest. John Diggle from Arrow in 10th is in the finals, at the expense of 3 Arrow characters that made last years finals when there was no cap on finalists from a show. Several shows have finalists who either were not even around last year, or had never managed a finalist prior to now. The 100 with 3, iZombie, Rookie Blue, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt all with 2 each, Agent Carter, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Daredevil, How To Get Away With Murder with 1 each. Missing from the finals this year however from last years list is last years runner up Kenzi from "Lost Girl" probably due to her lack of screen time this year. Sara Lance/Canary from Arrow also missed out due to the maximum candidates rule. Both candidates from the Murdoch Mysteries, William Murdoch & Julie Ogden fell well short in the semi-finals this year, with Ogden finishing last. Sherlock Holmes & John Watson from "Sherlock" of course missed this years due to the shows hiatus. The Best Couple Category is another hotly contested award here every year. For such a pointless award compared to more respectable titles it does garner a lot of very crazy and some very passionate fans. This year has been mired in controversy of course, again, as it is almost every year. But again the "Arrow" combo of Oliver Queen & his now fiance Felicity Smoak (aka "Olicity") led the semi-final voting over the very unstable sort of couple of Root & Shaw (aka "Shoot") from "Person of Interest". Clarke & Lexa (Clexa) from "The 100" were a bit further behind in 3rd. The top 4 finalists from last year all find themselves back in the finals again. Along with Olicity, Castle & Beckett "Caskett", Bo & Lauren "Docubbus" & Emma & Hook "CaptainSwan" all made the finals again. Missing the finals this year are Kenzi & Hale from Lost Girl due to 1 or both characters not being on the show anymore. Kurt Hummel & Blaine Anderson from "Glee" who seemingly were replaced by another Glee couple it seems. Damon & Elena from "The Vampire Diaries" which was a mild shock to me, but with 1 of the leads having left the show I guess it was out of sight, out of mind for their fans. Barry Allen & Felicity Smoak, yet both characters find themselves in the finals. Besides Shoot & Clexa, there were a few other new additions. barry Allen & Iris West (WestAllen) "The Flash", Robin Hood & Regina Mills (OutlawQueen) "Once Upon A Time" Santana Lopez & Brittany Pierce "Glee". After missing last years finals by 5 votes Amy Farrah Fowler & Sheldon Cooper "ShAmy" from "The Big Bang Theory" find themselves back in after 1 year out of the finals, along with Snow White & Prince Charming from "Once Upon A Time" who also were in 2013 but missed out in 2014. With all 3 former champions in this category, along with a couple new serious contenders, I expect a lot of fanbases ahrd at work trying to push their choices to the top in the finals. On that note, it should be noted that ONE finalist (and 2 others...but on lesser scales) had more than 1 person attempt to purposely cheat in the semi-finals, logging in 1000s of votes by circumventing the IP rule.... but, as those from past years are aware... thats not the only line of defense I use to stop this. Those votes were all discared and ONLY votes for that candidate from other voters were counted. Attempts like that in the finals wont be handled so delicately. The only winner of this award in the 3 years of its existence seems poised to take it again. The two time runner up Jimmy Fallon finds himself finishing 2nd again to Ellen in this round. Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and Conan O'Brien all make the finals for a fourth time, along with John Oliver in his 2nd finals. Last years field had 8 finalists, this year only 6. Former 2X finalists David Letterman and Jimmy Kimmel both missed the finals with Kimmel not even making the semi-finals. The Best Writing Category has most of the same shows that made the inagural awards final round last year. Only Orange Is The New Black and the currently inactive Sherlock did not make it back to this years finals. A few new shows to the finals made the finals this year. Person of Interest and Agents Of SHIELD were strong contenders, both finishing in the top 4 in the semi-finals. Another pack of four newcomers to the finals followed not too much furtner behind, The 100, Once Upon A Time, Agent Carter & Daredevil all made the finals as well. Last years winner, Arrow, is back in the finals as the vote leader in the semi-finals, after a modest 5th place showing in the opening round. In a rare feat, Arrow actually increased its vote total from round 1 where there was no limit to voting, to round 2 where there was a 1 per voting restriction. the two opening round voting goliaths, hannibal & Person of Interest had somewhat different round 2 successes. While both qualified for the finals, POI managed to stick around in 2nd, while Hannibal fell back to 10th. last years runner up, Lost Girl also qualified, but barely, sneaking in down at 11th. The Best Stunts Category also won by Arrow last year looks poised for a possible repeat performance this year. Much like the writing category, almost everyone from last year is back. Only Supernatural didnt make it back to the finals this year, being replaced by newcomer Daredevil. The difference between last year & this year seems to be who the contenders to Arrows title might be. Last years runner ups Lost Girl and the eliminated Supernatural dropped considerably this year, while two also rans in the finals last year Person Of Interest and The Flash find themselves going into the finals as the contenders. Only finalists last year to miss the mark this year were two of my faves, Molly Quinn & Jennifer Love Hewitt. Despite the finalists list expanding from 16 to 20. Newcomers to the finals this year will include Amy Acker, Sarah Shahi, Gillian Anderson, Hayley Atwell, Elizabeth Henstridge, Grace Park. The last 3 winners, Emily Bett Rickards, Jennifer Lawrence and Stana Katic are all in this years finals. Along with 4 time top 3 finalist Zoie Palmer. In a rare occurance in these awards, pretty much all the leaders in the nomination round were near the top in the semi-finals. The top 4 in this round, Rickards, Acker, Shahi, Palmer, were also the top 4 in the opening round. As well, Anderson, Silk and Parrilla in the opening round all finished in the top 8 & did so here as well. This is nothing short of rare for these awards, as the opening round often sees 1 or 2 hopefuls being propped up by a couple enthusiastic supporters fall by the wayside in round 2 when the voting is limited to 1 each. Last years winner Emily Bett Rickards had sizable leads in the 1st & 2nd rounds & would seem like a good bet to repeat this year. The Sexiest Actor Category was not so predictable. While last years winner Stephen Amell did lead the semi-final voting, he was an adequate 8th in the opening round. The Nomination round vote leader Mads Mikkelsen continued with trying to make an impact by coming in 2nd in the semi-finals. His co-star, who finished 2nd in round 1, didnt even qualify for the finals. Strange to say the least, its usually not till the finals that fandoms abandon a 2nd choice when voting is streamlined to only 1 or 2 picks. Another top 5 opening round vote getter didnt make the finals, Vincent D'Onofrio, as the power of the small handful of voters he had in the first round couldnt get enough of their fans to follow suit in round 2. Jim Caviezel, Jared Padalecki & Chris Hemsworth round out the top 5 in the semi-finals. Only Caviezel was a top 5 name after round one of voting. Three time winner Jensen Ackles qualified for the finals in 7th, the lowest hes ever come into the finals at. The Best Non-Human Character or Prop category looks poised to potentially have a new winner. The four time winner, The Impala from "Supernatural" seems to have some stiff competition this year. The "Person Of Interest" dog Bear has led the voting in both rounds, with another POI candidate second in both, The Machine. While The Impala did improve from the 1st round to the 2nd round by going from a 5th place showing up to a 3rd place showing & was less than 100 votes behind the leader, this is clearly the first ever sign of any challenge to the defending 4X champions crown. Interestingly the 3rd place finisher in round 1, did not even make the finals, finishing 2nd to last. While the last place qualifier in round 1 finished in the top 5 this round. The Winner of the 2014 Best Of TV Award for Best Action Or Drama Program is.... Arrow (CW) Last year Arrow beat the defending two time champion Castle to win the honour, it was a mild upset. This year, Arrow returns to the top and it seemed like a foregone conclussion through much of the voting. With this win, Arrow nabs 9 Awards this year. While the show spent much of 2014 killing off characters close to the shows lead character Oiliver Queen, the shows fans have become a nearly unstoppable force on these awards. With 2587 votes, the show sets a new categorry record for most votes, and largest margin of victory 1,499 over runner up 2011 & 2012 winner Castle with 1088 votes. In 3rd is Sherlock in its 1st finals with 772 votes. In 4th was Covert Affairs with 531 votes in the shows 1st & seemingly only finals appearance on news that it has been canceled. In 5th is Person Of Interest with 358 votes. In 6th Criminal Minds, the only show to be in all 5 finals for the category, down from 3rd last year. In 7th this year is Hannibal in its first finals appearance. In 8th is The Blacklist in its 1st year of eligibility after finishing 6th in the new program category last year. In 9th is Murdoch Mysteries, the 1st ever show to make the finals for Canadian station CBC. The Winner of the 2014 Best Of TV Award for Best Action or Drama Actor is.... Christopher Gorham "Covert Affairs" It seemed a foregone conclussion that this years winner would be from Castle or Arrow based on the first two rounds of voting & years prior voting. Instead Christopher Gorham "Covert Affairs" pulls out a quite frankly, unexpected win. Gorham who brings to life blind CIA officer Auggie Anderson on the show pulled out all the stops to win. Using twitter & the social celebrity networking site WhoSay to encourage fans to vote for him. This is the 1st time Best Action or Drama Actor Award has been won by someone from a show that has no other awards. This is Covert Affairs 1st & only award as the show recently was canceled by USA. Runner up Stephen Amell "Arrow" was 3rd last year narrowly beat out the 2013 winner, his co-star John Barrowman by 4 votes. Fair to say the vote split of these 2, and the other 2 Arrow cast on the ballot had some play in this years winner. In 4th is the 2 time winner of the award Nathan Fillion "Castle". Well back in 5th is James Spader "The Blacklist" in his 2nd finals appearance, up from last years 7th. In 6th is Mads Mikkelsen "Hannibal" down 1 spot from 5th last year. In 7th is Yannick Bisson "Murdoch Mysteries" in his 1st ever finals apperance. Emily Bett Rickards "Arrow" After last years near miss, it was not a large shock that this years winner for Best Action or Drama Actress is Emily Bett rickards from "Arrow. In 2013 this years runner up Stana Katic "Castle" won her 3rd consecutive award with a narrow 4 vote win over Rickards. This year Emily left no doubt who would win with a 1912 vote total and a 700 vote margin of victory, both category records. Katic with 1212 finds herself in 2nd. In 3rd was a tie between Maggie Smith of "Downton Abbey" in her 1st finals appearance and Amy Acker "Person of Interest" who was 5th last year. In 5th is Pauley Perrette "NCIS" marking the 1st ever finals appearance for the show in any category. In 6th was last years 3rd place finalist Lucy Liu "Elementary". In 7th Helene Joy "Murdoch Mysteries" in her 1st finals appearance. In 8th is Katie Cassidy "Arrow" in her 1st finals appearance. The Winner of the 2014 Best Of TV Award for Favorite TV Program is.... Arrow After back-to-back wins for another CW show "Supernatural" the network wins again, this time with their 3rd crime fighting vigilante show "Arrow". With 1271 votes, Arrow set a new record for most votes in the category, previously held by Supernatural in 2012 with 706 . Also largest margin of victory with 300, previous record was 218 by Supernatural in 2012 Last years runner up, grabbed the same honour this year. Lost Girl finished 2nd with 971 votes, marking the 2nd highest vote total of a show in the 3 years of this award. The former champion Supernatural rounds out the top 3 with 684 votes. Continual contender Castle finished 4th for its 2nd time in the 3 years of the award, improving on its 6th place from last year. Orphan Black nabbed 5th, a sharp increase from its 10th place finish last year. Once Upon A Time finished 6th, just downf rom last years 5th place finish. The Walking Dead in 9th is an improvement on last years 13th, but still down from the 1st year when it finished 6th. Game Of Thrones in 10th slips a bit from its 7th place spot last year. Doctor Who finished 11th, a sharp drop from the 4th place finish the show had last year. The Big Bang Theory finishes 15th after being 9th last year.
