Last night was the Gala event for the 13th annual Leo Awards. The best of British Columbia's TV & movie industry gathered to hand out their top awards. This years event was held at the Hotel Vancouver, after a scheduling change prevented them from holding it at their usual place, the Westing Bayshore. With the change in venue came a few challenges.
The most notable challenge was the red carpet set up on Georgia street. In the past, at the Bayshore, the carpet was set up along a very quiet and spacious sidewalk along side the hotels convention centre. This set up was great for everyone involved, as it was spacious & well lit with natural light when it is sunny. This year however, the red carpet was set up on the sidewalk of a mains treet that dozens of people use every minute. The carpet itself took up about 2/3 of the sidewalk, leaving a slim 3-5 ft ledge for fans & onlookers, uncredited media, autograph hounds & passer bys to navigate, with a lane of a busy thoroughfare just behind them. Thankfully for the awards there was no incidents with traffic hitting any people, despite many people, myself included, occasionally using the 1st lave of the street to walk in.
The cast of "Sanctuary" was the front & centre draw of the television side of the awards for the mostpart. With the loss of "Stargate Universe" this year, the gang from Sanctuary made up a lot larger portion of this years TV representation. SGU did have 1 representitive there, Jennifer Spence, a nominee for Best supprting actress in a drama, but failed to win, losing out to Lucia Walters from "Life Unexpected" in their 1 & only nomination as well. Ryan Robbins did bring home a solo award for the Sanctuary cast in the Best Supporting male category.
Many of the more notable Vancouver based shows won some awards as well. Fox sci-fi hit "Fringe" lead all TV shows in wins with 3 (tied with Sanctuary) for Cinematogray, Production design & best guest actor for Michael Eklund. "Supernatural" won for best visual effect. "Smallville" won for best program in its final season. "Human Target" won for best stunt co-ordinator.
Smaller shows like "Blackstone", wich won 2 awards walked away with the more notable awards for TV acting. Carmen Moore won the best actress award. The best actor went to Callum Keith Rennie from "Shattered"
In the movie side of the awards, "Gunless" walked away with 4 awards including best prgraom, cinematography, production design & stunt co-ordinator. "Altitude", "Transparency" & "Fathers & Sons" won 2 awards each, the latter taking home best supporting actor Jay Brazeau. Several movies snagged 1 award each, including "Life, Above All", "Amazon Falls" which April Telek took best lead actress, "Tucker And Dale VS Evil" which Tyler Labine took best lead actor & "Repeaters" which Alexia Fast took best supporting actress for.
Other notable winners were Paul McGillion for best lead actor in a short drama movie "A Fine Young Man" (which lead the way with 4 wins in that section..including best program), Shirley Broderikc for best actress in a short drama "The Closer You Get To Canada". "Mighty Jerome" won 4 awards, including best documentary program. "The Haunting Hour" won 4 awards as well in best youth or childrens program, including best show & best performance for Richard Harmon.
"Hiccups" had 5 wins, including best comedy program & best performance for Nancy Robertson, that was the most of anyone at the awards.
Below are some pics of the presenterrs, nominees & winners as they arrived for the awards.

First & foremost, thank you to the amazing crew of writers, directors, producers & behind the scenes staff of this series. Without your work, none of this would at all have been possible.
To the cast, I am sure some of you I will cross paths with again over the years. I wish you all the best of luck in future endeavours, but dont be upset if I always remember you as ".*insert character name here* from SGU", it is not that your new work is not good, its just that Stargate Universe was so amazing. To the few of you that I may not cross paths with again, thanks. Not just for your work on the show, but being so terrific off it. I have met every main cast member, and many of the secondary part time cast, each & every one of you was great in person. It is not rare to meet great & friendly actors or actresses, it IS rare for the entire cast to be that way, especially such a large cast. Your encounters with me is what drove me to give the show a chance, YOU made me a fan.
May 9,2011 is a day that should be mourned & celebrated in television land. Mourned, because it is the loss of another terrific, creative & entertaining program that will very likely end up getting replaced by some subpar fluff wrestling program or reality show. Celebrated, because for 2 years we were treated to television excellence, each month, the shows & scripts became better. The rough potential the early episodes showed blossomed to pure excellence as season 2 carried on its way to the premature series finale.
I found it painful & comforting that the show would end with Eli Wallace manning the ship by himself. Although Rush has always been the unofficial captain of the ship, Eli was more often than not, the one getting the Destiny out of any variety of sticky situations. It was painful in knowing we'll never get to see what the outcome was. Did Eli survive? Did the ship survive? Its comforting to know that with Eli at the helm, the Destiny's passengers will likely have succeeded in this daring task, as he will most certainly put the ship & the crews interests ahead of his own if it came to that.
So many questions still to answer. Does Dr. Park ever regain her sight back? Does TJ find a cure for ALS? Would Varro & TJ ever get together? Or are Young & TJ destined to end up together? Will Eli ever find someone? Will the ship ever finish its journey? Will the crew ever get home? So many uncertain questions without answers. Answers that we will probably never get now....UNLESS....Syfy has a brilliant epiphany down the road, sayyyy in a yr & 1/2?? Maybe Syfy sees some of their programs struggle that they hoped would thrive, with openings in the schedule, they resurrect SGU. Take into consideration time to write episodes, get cast together (assuming the majority are available?) & film it, they could be ready to return in about...3 years. Coincidence? Even if its a 1 off movie, it could wrap up loose ends.
Of course, the likelyhood of such a situation happening is low. A lot of luck & chips need to fall into place. Notable cast may have found stable full time roles on other projects by then, leaving large gaps in cast. Would the writers be able to string together a script in time? Not to mention Syfy admitting they made a mistake & giving the show 1 more chance.
The sad truth is, its probably the last we will see Dr. Nicholas Rush (Robert Carlyle), Col. Everett Young (Louis Ferreira), Eli Wallace (David Blue), Lt. Matthew Scott (Brian J. Smith), Master Sgt Ronald Greer (Jamil Walker Smith), Chloe Armstrong (Elyse Levesque), Camile Wray (Ming Na), lt Tamara Johansen (Alaina Huffman), 2nd Lt Vanessa James (Julia Benson), Dr. Dale Volker (Patrick Gilmore), Adam Brody (Peter Kelamis), Dr. Lisa Park (Jennifer Spence), Col David Telford (Lou Diamond Philips) & the countless other part time cast members that fill out the cast of the show, all in 1 place.
I wont say good bye to this show, because I still have naive blind hope something will resurrect it (afterall I waited 2+ years for a Dead Like Me movie..and finally got 1). All I will say is, hopefully Elis' calculations are correct & we all get to see you all again when you wake up in 3 years.
The other night I caught a scene being shot for a new TV Pilot for ABC called "Once Upon A Time".
The series stars Jennifer Morrison ("House", "How I Met Your Mother" & "Bringing Ashley Home"), Ginnifer Goodwin ("Big Love" & "Walk The Line"), Robert Carlyle ("Stargate Universe" & "Trainspotting" ), Lana Parilla ("24", "Boomtown", "Spin City"), Josh Dallas ("Thor" & "The Descent 2") & Raphael Sbarge ("The Guardian" & "prison Break").
The show is based on the premised that all the fairy tales you have heard of, actually are real.
On this particular day I caught Jennifer Morrison portraying her character "Anna" driving around with a young boy who I only heard the name "Kevin" for.( Not sure anymore details of who it is, anyone with a good knowledge of local young actors...feel free to let me know & I will revise this...UPDATE - It is Jared Gilmore). The scene takes place in Massachusets. Earlier in the day I was at another location for them, but was uunable to see what the scene was since it was covered with large black screens...but it entailed "Anna" being in a high end restaurant with dozens of well dressed extras.
So thats the 1st report from the new ABC TV Pilot "Once Upon A Time".
But it will take even more luck & work than even the likes of the characters have had in surviving as many near deaths as they have.
Last month, a post made by a site called deadline.com stated that Syfy, a station allegedly for science-fiction television, was going to cancel 1 of the few shows, on their quickly depleting list of original programs.
Stargate Universe (aka- SGU) cast & crew learned this news not thru a phone call, but a tweet. A 140 character or less update on their livelyhoods & careers. While the utter lack of class Syfy station has shown to their possible former employees is appalling, and should be a red flag warning sign to anyone who in the future thinks of working on a project for them, what is actually more disturbing is that they let this news slip out to a website to tell the world first. They didnt even have the respect, decency or professionalism to tell those who it affects themselves. They let a website tell it, then later used a 140 character or less post on twitter to confirm it. It really makes you wonder how Syfy president Dave Howe was ever given the job if this is how he handles such major issues.
The amazing part is that the station has currently 6 actual sci-fi style original program shows to its list. Of it, there is really only 3 they have that can without question say they outperform SGU at this time.
"Being Human" 1st season- Unproven
"Caprica" Already Cancelled
"Eureka" which started with 4.1M for the shows premiere episode, and is down to 2.5M now in its 4th season.
"Haven" in only its first season Unproven.
"Sanctuary" one show that has managed to capture an audience.
"Warehouse 13" which started with a 3.5M opening & has dropped off to 2.4M for its S2 closing.
While the numbers for SGU are below that of Eureka, Sanctuary & Warehouse 13, the fact still remains that Syfy had very few shows they can call their own & are often filling their television voids with marathons of shows that fans have very likely watched already, dont care for specifically, or more likely, already own the box sets of. Even the most ardent Star Trek fan can only sit thru their favorite versions of the show so many times.
This is a station thats been so desperate to fill time, it has resorted to adding Professional Wrestling & a reality game show about video game players to its table of shows. While I have been in the past a pro wrestling fan & have nothing against those that still are, reality is, it has no right being on a network solely devoted to sci-fi programming. But, it is a ratings juggernaut for a station & has low costs to them as WWE picks up much of the production costs. There in lies the problem. Syfy has sold out. Its no longer about creating programming for a subsection of society that tend to be loyal to a fault for products they like. Its about whoring themselves out for ever last penny they can, even at the cost of the stations soul.
This station has very few of its own shows, so why cancel 1 that has held its own in season 2? While season 1 saw a sharp drop in ratings, season 2 has been steady. There is something to be said about a show, on a station where almost everything it airs has massive ratings drops, is holding its own & not losing viewers. While season 1 was finding its feet & at times, may have been a bit long in getting to its points, season 2 has been intense, full of action & arguably amazing. If S1 was "decent", season 2 has been "absolutely amazing". If fans from S1 were to rejoin, they would be blown away at the changes & character development that has happened since then. but we may not see it develop beyond, because as it stands right now, its to be terminated at seasons end... despite being probably the best show currently on the network & arguably, one of the top sci-fi shows on all of TV.
The question is "what now?" for the show.
Various campaigns thru twitter & facebook have popped up to "Give SGU another season" & it certainly is a campign that has garnered a lot of attention. One campaign has garnered over 8500 fans on facebook (probably be 10,000.. if they hadnt spit in the face of the fans by alienating them thru actions depicted by the leader whom told a cast members mother to 'fuck off" in a disagreement), while smaller campaigns have popped up ranging from a few dozen to several hundred. These campaigns are so passionate about what they are doing, they now find themselves at odds over how to best promote the concepts & gameplans to save the show. But I am not going to get into the politics of fandom in here...this is about coming up with a gameplan for the show. This does show however, excessive devotion. To fight this hard, so hard you are even fighting with yourselves, means you want to see the idea succeed. It might be self destructive, or, it might be healthy.
While shows that are cancelled arent all that often saved by their networks, or new networks, it does happen. I can vouch for that on 2 different fronts. Two of my all time favorite shows, Dead Like Me, and Robson Arms both came back from essentially being dead for short lived returns.
DLM managed a straight to DVD movie to quell its fans & while it was not anything near the 3rd season fans screamed for, petitioned for, wrote into Showtime & MGM for, and even held rallies for outside the offices, it was something...even if it was a hack version of something (try to not rant about Sarah Wynter's lack of acting skills right now...*deep breath*). The shows fans fought hard and got something.
While Robson Arms was the little show that could. It first fought just to get on the air. After season 1, it sat, with no 2nd season announcement for over a year. Its second season aired 19 months after the final episode of S1 aired. It fought & clawed its way back from death to manage not just a 2nd season, but a 3rd too, before again, meeting an unjust fate by CTV. The fanbase for them was admittedly far smaller than DLM or SGU. But they were devoted & let the station know what they wanted....and they got it. The reality is, fighting sometimes works.
All that being said, stats dont lie, lots of shows have campaigns to resurrect their programs, and most fail. But I can tell you, from my personal experiences, it can happen.
SGU is 1 that could have that lifeline to draw from. It has some things going for it, such as it is a Canadian based show. This means a Canadian station could look at a show, with an already developed fanbase & jump in & just fine tune things to their liking a little. The most likely choice for this is "Space" the Canadian version of Syfy (they have many of the same programs on), but Space isn't known for creating its own shows too much. In fact, they have already come out & said its not feasable. Like Syfy, who gets their approval from the pursestrings of a bigger media conglomerate (NBC), Space also is under the umbrella of a media conglomerate, CTVglobemedia, arguably the largest such television empire in Canada. Besides Space, the CTV empire is responsible for over 20 other stations from basic cable to pay per view channels in Canada. It is, without question, the most viable solution for a home for SGU to end up on if a Canadian company steps up.
The question becomes, how to convince them to run with the show.
Well, the first fact is simple. SGU is filmed in Canada. As a Canadian station, Space is obligated to show a minimum amount of Canadian content. Sure, they have quite a bit already, including EVERY...SINGLE...SHOW Syfy carries right now, but this would give the CTV empire 1 more, which they also could move to their flagship station CTV for any variety of schedule filling needs (a weekend afternoon filler, or late night marathon materials)
The second fact needs to be about financial potential. They are business people afterall. Can they make a profit from this? Or, at least make it financially sensible thru selling off international distribution?
The U.S. has 10Xs the population of Canada. It is also the primary financial centre for television. Ratings in America count exponentially more than ratings in Canada. So for a Canadian show to do well, they theoretically need far beyond 10% of the domestic numbers to warrant labelling something a success...unfortunately, the budget of the show still needs to stay comparable...so suddenly, you need to have better results than even that assuming U.S. numbers struggle to rise. That is where it gets complicated...proving that is possible without being able to show it first. I dont know what the numbers are on SGU showing on Space, but theoretically, if its doing about 150,000 households or more, it would be doing approximately 1.5Xs better here than in the U.S. currently, where its doing about 1.0M households a week. Those numbers may not be enough for CTV to take a chance on it by itself. This is where the idea of a split cost idea with a foreign station may come in.
Why couldnt the Canadian company work on a split deal with another country that admires their Sci-fi programming? Hello U.K?? We might have a business proposition for someone there. With a split cost between two stations in two different companies, it becomes quite financially feasable...then take into consideration distribution rights still in the rest of the world...well, how could it NOT look appealing?
The complexity of striking a deal to get the shows rights might be confusing as well. If Syfy has the rights, what might happen could be a deal where CTV, for the Space Channel, buys the rights from Syfy, in agreement, they give Syfy a deal on the U.S. rights for broadcasting it, taking away some bargaining power for looking for the best financial situation in the U.S. market.
Maybe, there is even a deal, like how other shows from other networks have done it. Where CTV, for the Space Channel, doesnt actually buy the rights, but instead puts up some $ for the production costs to Syfy to continue making the show.
If MGM is the owner of the shows rights, what do they want? Do they barter a deal where they get to choose the U.S. distributror? Do they get a nice deal on DVD sales? Or do they simply look at it as a dead asset that they can turn into liquid asset now & sell for whatever they can get?
Theres still even outside all of those question, the possibility that maybe they cant work out a deal to generate a 3rd season...so what about a few straight to DVD movie like Dead Like Me or Firefly managed? Simply to wrap up loose ends & complete the story? Correct me if I am wrong, but the sales for Dead Like Me: Life After Death were financial gold for the company. I vividly recall it being in the top 3 in Canada & top 10 in the U.S. opening day on Amazon. In the top 5 in Canada after a week & top 20 in the U.S. Unfortunately, Firefly was not something I followed when it did its movie, but I recall hearing a lot of buzz about it, I am sure its sales were just as incredible. If they put together a 2 or 3 movie set to wrap up the storlines (although its being suggested the creators are saying they cant do it with anything less than a season...you take what you can get).
How can you, the fan get involved? The obvious answer- BUY SGU PRODUCTS. But also, make your voices heard. Let the stations know, let advertisers know, hell, even let the cast know, that they are wanted back.
Any potential suitors will want to see a healthy show. So alienating & abandonning it is not the best avenue. Support is. Buying the DVDs is good, buying episodes online is good, but in the end tv viewers matter the most. ALSO, key battle point people often overlook..... MAKE NOTE OF WHAT PRODUCTS ARE PAYING FOR ADVERTISING TIME!! Seriously.
This can make a difference. If you see a product being advertised during an episode, whether its first run, or a repeat, make note of it, and definitely let that company know that you saw their ad on an SGU broadcast. Whether its a short email to their site, or a phone call into a comments/questions/complaints line, let them know. They are, afterall, the ones who pull the pursestrings open or closed. DO NOT take commercials lightly, they have more influence than most board members. If the products tell Syfy, or other stations "we are getting a lot of recognition off this show..." trust me, they will find a way to magically come up with the $ in their budget to keep making it.
Theres a lot of questions that I personally cant answer, but this does show that there are a multitude of potential options still out there for SGU to breathe more life. It is just a matter of whoever is holding the keys, to hand them to someone willing to take over.
Saving SGU is a real possibility. It will just take all hands on deck to steer the Destiny to that outcome... to complete its mission.

(portrayed by: Jensen Ackles on "Supernatural")
A hat-trick for Supernatural fans. Dean Winchester, the Jensen Ackles acted character on "Supernatural" takes the top spot in the Most Entertaining Or Fascinating Character of 2010 finals.
The apocalpyse stopping, demon hunting, sharp tongued older Winchester brother fended off a steep field of contenders, including some of his own castmates, as well as... 2 Smallville contestants.
Dean beat out Superman's main squeeze, "Smallville" cutie Lois Lane (Erica Durance) by 54 votes in the end 722-668
While Lois fans might feel disappointment that they gave up a lead they had had since very early in the contest, they can also take solace in the fact they prevented a clean sweep of the podium for Supernatural. 3rd spot goes to the monotone speaking often confused angel Castiel (played by Misha Collins) from Supernatural with 478 votes. Deans baby brother Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki) takes 4th spot at 459.
Oliver Queen, aka, The Green Arrow (Justin Hartley) from Smallville takes 5th spot with 357, while Crowley (Mark Sheppard) from Supernatural made a big push on the final day to jump from 11th to 6th with a final total of 343.
The best of the non SPN vs SV crew was the often absent minded scientist Dr. Walter Bishop (John Noble) on "Fringe" with 314 votes.
The mr. know it all theoretical physicist from "The Big Bang Theory" Dr. Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) with 291 votes grabbed 8th.
The Legen...wait for it.. Dary ladies man Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris) "How I Met Your Mother" grabbed 9th with 206, while socially awkward thief Parker (Beth Riesgraf) of "Leverage" rounds out the top 10 with 201.
Eli Wallace (David Blue) of "Stargate Universe" ginished 11th 179. Dexter Morgan (Michael C Hall) from "dexter" 12th with 152, Sam Axe (Bruce Campbell) "Burn Notice" 13th with 112, Michael Westen (Jeffrey Donovan) "Burn Notice" 91 and finally, Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik) "The Big Bang Theory" rounds out the contest with 75.
1ST - DEAN WINCHESTER 722
2ND - LOIS LANE 668
3RD- CASTIEL 478
4TH - SAM WINCHESTER 459
5TH - OLIVER QUEEN/GREEN ARROW 357
6TH - CROWLEY 343
7TH - DR. WALTER BISHOP 314
8TH - DR. SHELDON COOPER 291
9TH - BARNEY STINSON 206
10TH - PARKER 201
11TH - ELI WALLACE 179

Dean Winchester from "Supernatural"
In a year of highs & lows for his character Dean Winchester on The CW hit "Supernatural" Jensen Ackles acting skills were tested this year.
Ackles has often shown great prowess as a comedic actor on the show, but this season more than any, his dramatic skills were tested, and he seemed to pass.... at least our fans think he did. From getting the wholly hell beat out of him by his 6'5 brother Sam, to having to play the part of Death to help out his brother, Ackles portrayed Dean more seriously this year than perhaps any other. His win over Taye Diggs from "Private Practice" of 57 votes didnt even seem possible a couple days before closing, as Diggs had a sizable lead for most of the event. But when the SPN fanbase finally caught wind their show & cast were in, they came on fast & furious & eventually overtook the top spot 1117-1060.
The totals of 1117 & 1060 were the 1st & 2nd highest vote totals in all the polls. Showing this contest was the most hotly contested of the 7.
For "Fringe" star John Noble, 3rd place in what is essentially a popularity poll can be seen as a small victory with 471 votes.
After a very strong write in campaign in the nomination round, David Blue from "Stargate Universe" probably didnt disappoint the SGU fans by coming in 4th with 275 votes. "Burn Notice" star Jeffrey Doniovan frounded out the field with 249 votes.
1ST - JENSEN ACKLES "SUPERNATURAL" 1117
2ND - TAYE DIGGS "PRIVATE PRACTICE" 1060
3RD - JOHN NOBLE "FRINGE" 471
4TH - DAVID BLUE "STARGATE UNIVERSE" 275
5TH - JEFFREY DONOVAN "BURN NOTICE" 249
(Left to Right: Jensen Ackles & Jared Padalecki)
With the apocalypse prevented, the Winchester brothers, Sam & Dean have spent much of this season trying to get 1 of them their soul back & engaging with distant family in positive & negative ways.
The CW crushed the competition in this category. The top 2 spots go to their network. "Supernatural" beat out the Clark Kent centred "Smallville" 118 votes. This despite the two shows going toe-to-toe for most of the event. In the end, the last day & 1/2 of voting, the Metropolis fanbase seemed to lose steam & the fanbase who won a TV Guide contest earlier this year showed their online fandom again, winning here with a 894-776 score.
Fox sci-fi hit "Fringe" finished 3rd here, perhaps in an alternate world it won? With 395 votes.
The recently cancelled Syfy "Stargate Universe", the 3rd installment in the Stargate franchise started strong, but fizzled in the final couple days to finish 4th with 276 votes. Another syfy show "Warehouse 13" rounded out the list with 117 votes.
1ST - SUPERNATURAL 894
2ND - SMALLVILLE 776
3RD - FRINGE 395
4TH - STARGATE UNIVERSE 276
5TH - WAREHOUSE 13 - 117
There is only 1 day left for voting on the Best Of TV 2010 awards on my site.
With the People's Choice Awards done, this is the chance for some shows, who got shafted at the largest public voted awards to get a 2nd chance. If you have not already voted...You can vote here...
Despite lots of attempts to cheat/sabotage people, voting has continued. With each attempt to cheat or sabotage someone has come a new security issue I have had to deal with & create a way to sidestep the cheating. While I concede SOME cheater votes may have gotten mixed into the totals, MOST (i'll even say well over 95%) were thwarted.
Unfortunately for the likes of House, Smallville & Private Practice, some of their contenders were disqualified for either blatant cheating, or being sabotaged before proper defenses were put in place. It should be noted that while House, Smallville & Private Practice candidates were caught using automated voting bots, MANY legitimate votes from these shows were also cast. unfortunately, it just took 1 jerk to ruin your chances. I apologize to those who took the effort to rally support for their shows, only to have it go for nothing. Trust me when I say, future polls will have far more advanced steps in place to prevent this from happening again.
With that aside....with 1 day left of voting....here are the current results.

20- Getting Jerry Seinfeld two nights in a row
TV icon & comedian Jerry Seinfeld came to Vancouver for a couple shows this past summer on his current tour.
I have gotten Mr. Seinfeld before, and really, if it were not for hearing a few horror stories from around the continent, I likely wouldnt be including him in my top 20 for this past year.
Jerry had 2 shows here & it was night & day for how he acted after each show. Going in he told us "get me after the show". So we came back after the show & Mr. Seinfeld signed a moderate handful, but got far from everyone. Many went away empty handed as the funnyman signed for a handful before leaving. I managed 1 that night but was hoping for more. So I went back the 2nd night.
The encore night was much better, as Mr. Seinfeld stood outside for about 5 minutes signing, and everyone ran out of items. Another 3 for me the second evening took away the disappointment of the day prior.
It was after me reporting on getting him that I was made aware that several people had been shut out by him in other cities recently. He has apparently been elusive at venues where the option to get in unconfronted is an option. I heard from others at the city right after here, this was the case there as well.... which made me all the more thankful that he played a venue with only outside entrances.
With 2011 just around the corner, a new batch of bests should arise by the end of the year. With the likes of Mission Impossible 4, Twilight Breaking Dawn, Underworld 4 & Superman already slated for here, and the rumour that part of Die Hard 5 might come here, big names will certainly be in stock in Vancity in 2011. But, just like this past year many stars were here, its rarely the case of the big names that garner the best attention. The few times they do, they are worth noting though.
19- Benji & Joel Madden of Good Charlotte at the airport.
This past summer, the brother from Good Charlotte came to Vancouver for some hanging out time.
For a long time they were considered terrible signers, and we had not heard anything recent about them, so we prepared for the worst. My friend who got the tip of them coming in was hesitant to get too many things (which for him is rare), but I hastily raced to various used CD stores to get stuff for them.
Total, there was 5-6 hounds there all with CDs at the ready. All with blue sharpies, and proof cams at the ready. The old GC I had heard about would have snapped at such a scenario. I have heard on multiple occasions in multiple cities, the band arguing & even being physically aggressive towards hounds. So we were prepared for the worst.
Instead, we got a friendly, meek & personable Benji & Joel. They not only signed, they did multiples without complaint. A situation NONE of us expected, but were all happy to partake in.
18 - Getting 3X Olympic Gold Medal winner Hayley Wickenheiser at her tournament
Sure, I know, I got like a dozen Hayley's at the Olympics. So whats the deal with getting her 1 more time thats so special?
Well, first, theres the fact that it was after Olympic photos were out, thus giving us a good chance to get autographs from her on items from the 2010 games. The games that will, because of where they were, always be the most special to me. Second, it is 1 of my favorite athletes of all time, so I am always finding new things I want to get done.
But what topped that was how cool she was about it & how she essentially held up her speaking engagement to sign for the group of us. She had an autograph session in a hotel that was housing her & some of the teams playing in her tournament. It was open to the public, so a handful of us went. Hayley the day prior had told 2 of the hounds to "bring everything tomorrow" & they did. I only came with 5 items and soon felt grossly underprepared as I watched my friends roll about 20 & 50 items each on her.
Hayley did it all, said she didnt care what they were doing with it & even suggested she hoped they got good $ for it, and chatted at length with us in between piles. She took photos with my friends & their kids with her Gold medal.
At the end, my friends both gave her collections, 1 in CD form, and 1 in actual print form of many of her greatest moments. She had apparently told them the day before that she had not seen much or any of the items they had... so they both did different things to show their appreciation to her. As you can imagine, she was thoroughly impressed & thankful.
I dont know how many sports you can find where the undisputed best player of all time in that sport would sit down & sign 50 items for someone, without complaining and expecting nothing back.
17- Vancouver actors going to & coming back from Comic-Con
Every year a variety of Vancouver based shows send a few of their cast to San Diego for the annual Comic-Con event.
This gives Vancouver autographers a good chance to clean up on some of the more elusive of casts. Shows like Smallville, Stargate Universe & Sanctuary, who primarily shoot in studios are easier to find when there is only 1 flight in & out of town (granted some did take connecting flights thru other places.)
A literal plethora of action happened going in & coming out. From Smallville, we got the likes of Erica Durance, Cassidy Freeman, Justin Hartley, and Tower Prep/Smallville cutie Elise Gatien. From Fringe we got Anna Torv, Blair Brown, Lance Reddick & Jasika Nicole (also saw Josh Jackson & John Noble, but neither were too receptive on departures). Supernatural stars Jensen Ackles & Jared Padalecki were terrific on departures, as was Sanctuary star Amanda Tapping returning. We also saw a few others from shows I was not prepared for like Eureka & Psych.
There was plenty to get, and often, you would miss 1 person getting another as they would come & go in groups. But in the end, it was still worth the effort, as there are no less than 5 people from that weekend that I got that I have not been able to get since.
16- Getting Lady Gaga after a show
Lady Gaga did 2 shows in Vancouver this past summer. The first night, she signed for everyone outside after the show.
I am not going to sit here & tell you I was "really excited" or "thrilled" to get her, or even that she was coming. Personally, I think shes grossly overhyped. That being said, I really had to respect the P.R. job she did after her first show here. She signed, signed some more & didnt care what the item was or who was handing it to her.
With the venues security actually trying to prevent me from getting an autograph, she reached for my item with a seeming purpose as to say "I dont care. Just hand it to me". She signed without hesitation for several minutes, and didnt shy away from the flashes of cameras.
Although she was less willing to sign the 2nd day, the 2 time Grammy Award winning artist was still a willing signer the day after her show & the night of the 1st show. For someone of her status, at the peak of her career, to sign 2 out of 3 days is pretty decent.
With 2 autographs on the trip, I consider her trip to Vancouver a success.
15- Getting Tom Welling... TWICE
In the 10th season of Smallville I have gotten Tom Welling to sign TWICE. In the 9 seasons prior- ZERO.
Long regarded as the worst signer in Vancouver, Welling this season has quite literally gone into a signing frenzy.... if you count about 8-10 autographs this season a frenzy. Prior to this season I only knew 2 people who had got the current Clark Kent in this town. Suddenly, this year I know of 4 people who have gotten him now... funny enough, each of us have got him on multiple occasions.
My first epic shocking moment came back in late July, only a week earlier Mr. Welling had outright denied me... as he had many times prior over the years. So I was not expecting a change in results...but this time, there was a good luck charm in tow I didnt know about. See, Tom was coming back from a trip to L.A. with Matt Barr, a cast member from the TV show Hellcats that Tom produces. Matt as I will tell you later, is quite chummy with us. So when I saw him with Tom, I was hopeful that maybe Matt's persona would rub off on Tom.
I broke the ice with "will you sign TONIGHT Tom" *emphasising the tonight to remind him that just a week earlier he turned me down standing in practically the same spot* with a somewhat unimpressed roll of the eyes, he reached over, grabbed the pen & signed. I was in shock for a minute or two. I walked over and snapped a quick photo of Matt & Tom going their seperate ways, then joked with Matt as he left that he was my good luck charm. I got him on a magazine that i had, no joke, carried with me on & off for TEN YEARS.
Proof Matt is my good luck charm would come a bit later in the summer/fall when at an event for the Smallville's 200th episode party, Matt was in attendance and wouldnt you know it, Tom signed for everyone that waited it out that night...all 4 of us. It was without a doubt, the largest "autograph session" Tom has done for any experienced autograph hounds in Vancouver ever.
14- Jensen Ackles, almost any given weekend.
When the biggest star of a hit TV show comes thru an airport, they expect some level of notoriety. Some handle it poorly, some handle it well.
Jensen Ackles, for the mostpart, handles it quite well. The man who plays the sharp tongued Dean Winchester on Supernatural has been quite good about the growing attention this past couple years. For the first 4-5 yrs here, him & his castmates came thru Vancouver with little to no attention on them most days. now, any given weekend, odds are, there will be at least 1 person out there waiting for them.
To top it off, the recently crowned "Best Lead actor in a drama" on the highly popular SpoilerTV polls is not just willing with signatures & photos with, but he is quite willing to give an opinion on most anything if asked. In fact, I have on multiple occasions have opted not to post things hes said, because I didnt know if its something that might come back to bite him in the ass later if the wrong people in the wrong position were to read it.
It was the attitudes of Ackles & his co-star Jared Padalecki that have made me a fan of the show. I started watching it because of them, and found it to be one of the best shows on....but I never would have given it a chance, if it werent for their off screen actions.
13- Steven Segal signing day after day
A lot of actors who are iconic names tend to be grumpy as their star fades. Steven Segal is not one of those people.
The action icon has been in Vancouver for awhile doing a show/series of movies. In the early days of shooting, he was staying at a local hotel, and would be seen at least once or twice a day on average. Every time, he would willingly sign for whoever asked. Even those who he knew he had already signed for.
Since moving to a permanant residence, he has not been seen around much, but for his efforts in the early days of shooting here, Segal earns a spot on the list.
12- The cast of Hellcats around town.
Sure, Ashley Tisdale is a bit unfriendly at times, but she does show flashes of niceness. Her aside, the cast of the new CW show Hellcats is pretty great.
Aly Michalka (along with her now guest starring sister AJ) is the real star of the show, and her off screen personality is absolutely spectacular. With the exception of 1 evening recently, she always seems up to the task of signing, chatting or taking photos with whoever is asking, regardless how many times she knows shes seen them.
Matt Barr has been elusive in the past few months, but when he is seen around, he is a willing signer & chatter. Barr is one of the few stars who if he sees a hound or pap will make the effort to give a head nod or a hello before you see him. He also holds the distinction of being at the same place on BOTH occasions where I got Tom Welling this past year.... so hes also a good luck charm it would seem.
Heather Hemmens is quite pleasant. Says alot about her acting that she can pull of the ruthless Alice character after you meet her. Sweet & friendly, Hemmens has been known to be so nice that she was still signing for me, while a driver (not even HER personal driver, but a hired one by Ms. Tisdale) was grabbing at her arm trying to make her go.
Robbie Jones seems to always be all smiles. Recently upon returning from California, he was spotted by a larger than usual group & willingly signed for everyone & joked about how cold it was here & that he wasnt used to the weather.
As a unit, this cast has been great. The few minor souring experiences with Ashley are more than made up for by Michalka, Barr, Hemmens & Jones.
11- Getting Misha Collins on the set of Supernatural
There is an unwritten, enforced rule on the set of Supernatural. Dont ask people for autographs there.
While this rule is predominantly enforced on the regulars for the shows two top stars Jared Padalecki & Jensen Ackles, its implied on everyone with the rest of the cast as well.
So I was more than excited when I had the lucky break of being able to get Misha Collins, who plays the angel Castiel on the show, on set, in wardrobe. It was my first time meeting Collins with items to get signed. I had met the man 1 time prior, the season before, but was not yet aware of who he was, since I hadnt got to that point in the show yet.
Another hound broke the ice, by encroaching into the area where Misha was, and with approval from Mr. Collins, we were allowed to wait for him as he came out of a tent to sign for us. After he signed, he chatted for a bit, and took a photo with me, in his Castiel wardrobe, then went back to the set.
A couple of unamused glares from the security on the set mostly rolled off me as I was sincerely excited to get the 1 main cast member from the show that had eluded me to that point.
Since then I have gotten him a couple more times, but that first meeting with him was the most memorable for the situation & how he dealt with it.
There was going to be a long, detailed 15 paragraph blog about this...but instead, you get cliff notes versions because the host of this site deleted my hour long job without any reason.
So. Below are some pics from the weekend that Stargate Universe headed to & came back from, the 2010 Gemini Awards in Toronto.
Best Actor Robert Carlyle, Louis Ferreira, Brian J Smith, Ming Na, David Blue, Julia Benson, Elyse Levesque, Alaina Huffman, Jennifer Spence, Jamil Walker Smith, Peter Kelamis & Patrick Gilmore were the people I saw over the weekend.
All signed, except Alaina Huffman, because her clearly annoyed husband was with her. I had heard horror stories of him not liking people asking for autographs, and her demeanour validated these claims, as he glared with quite a bit of displeasure at the grand total of 3 people there waiting & she seemed eager to just get out of there.
We had a good talk with Patrick Gilmore about the weekend, the partying & the skills of Peter Kelamis as a human bowling star.
We talked with Julia Benson at length about the weekend, the food & at times, lack there of at the parties & Canadian television as a whole.
We talked with Elyse Levesque about the weekend and the fact that her friends & herself will be working on a new video for her music "group Coupla Hot Chicks...Maybe Three once SGU wraps this week.
I asked Robert Carlyle if I could get a photo of him holding the Gemini, which he answered with a fairly emphatic no. Him & Louis Ferreira also chatted about the photos my friend had & how great they were, and Robert was quite pleased upon returning when my friend handed him some of the ones he liked that he saw when departing.
There is likely lots I am leaving out...but after putting in a hour writing the last one & having it deleted...I really dont have the patience to go into detail again.
Congratulations Robert on your win.
I am going have to say the cast of SGU is the nicest on TV. Its their attitudes that made me give the show a chance. I'm almost done the 1st season now, and glad I gave it a chance now.
