This is surprisingly my 1st blog on season 3, and it just happens to be for the last couple episodes. Batwoman has been tough for me to find this season, and the 3 times I had prior. Once was inside a theatre for the scene in the 1st episode of the season where the Mad Hatter stuff happened, once was in a forest and I couldnt get to a place where I could see it and not be in their way, and once when they were doing a driving scene in an episode. But this was my 1st time getting to see cast actually shooting scenes. On this day, I saw them filming in 2 different locations. First up, was in an alley beside the exterior location for the Rabbit Hole. In the 1st scene Robin Givens was on set as Jada Jett, showing up in her Rolls Royce & seeming to walk into the bar with a tray of coffees. After that, they did a scene where Jada was now walking back to her car, and another person was there in the alley when she got there..... Meagan Tandy as Sophie Moore. The scene had the pair have a long talk that seemed pretty dialogue heavy. Jada then gets into her car, closes the door, and drives off, while Sophie looks on a little unimpressed look on her face. Then Sophie talks to someone off camera that was not there filming in the scene, and eventually runs after the car down the alley. Later on, the crew moved over a couple blocks to do another scene later that night in a parking garage. Javicia Leslie was there, however, what I saw was her stunt double doing a scene. By the time Javicia was ready to do her part, I had been out in freezing temperatures for a while, and called it a night. But not before getting a few photos of the stunt team doing a shot where Batwoman nabs a random henchman and pulls him upside down as she flies up & down from a 5 story parking garage. A few days later, I caught up to them filming in a courtyard at our library, but they were just wrapping the scene when I got there, and no cast were around, so I just took a photo of the Gotham City flag that was there. The next night however, I did catch up to 1 more stunt team. I know Camrus Johnson was on set that night, but it was so darm & smoky, that I do not know if any of the photos I took were of him, but I definitely got a few of Batwing doing a stunt. In this case, unlike the night of the Batwoman stunt, I cant even say what happened because the smoke was so thick in the alley. All I know is it consisted of wirework, and was filmed with a drone. Batwoman season 3 is in currently on Wednesday nights on The CW in the U.S., and returns January 12, 2022 to start the back half of season 3. EDIT - 4:00 pm Pacific, May 19, 2021 - Context of the 1st nights scenes added, and photos from the 1st night, as well as a couple additional scenes of the Batwing outfit from the bottom half. Over the last 2 nights Batwoman has been shooting scenes for the season 2 finale in an alley in downtown Vancouver. On the 1st night, they shot a couple scenes. Early on this did a scene with cars on fire, and a hulked up bad guy raging (now know it is Jesse Hutch as Russel Tavaroff ... aka.. potentially Menace) tipping over a garbage bin, while men in Black Mask masks walk around with weapons... I then left for a couple hours, because a massive thunderstorm hit, it was so intense, the production even shut down for about half an hour for it. A bit later, they moved to the other end of the alley. There they did scenes with the hulked up character chasing Nicole Kang, and her stunt double up several flights of emergency stairs. While Kangs double did much of the harder work like the going from the ladder to the stairs, and getting dragged down the stairs by the villain, but Nicole did her fair share of work on it, including running up several cases of stars at a notable pace over & over again.... of course, that all leads into the 2nd nights starting scene.... where Mary Hamilton finds herself falling over the edge of the stairs. What will happen to Mary? But the spoiler you all are here for. Camrus Johnson was on set tonight. If you did not see my prior Batwoman blog from a month ago HERE you may not have known yet the result of the big Batwoman episode 14 cliffhanger where Luke Fox gets shot. But an even bigger spoiler than the fact Luke is alive came out tonight, as the crew tried to hide the reveal that Mr. Fox has his OWN superhero suit.... and while they definitely covered it pretty well, before they were aware that I noticed, I did snag a couple partial sets of the new suit Luke is sporting.... now the question is, will his new superhero name be something Batty? or Wingy? One thing that was interesting, was a piece of set dressing they used. There was a large fence that had a tarp on it, that had spray painted grafitti on it, and I am curious if any of it means anything.... so I added a couple photos of it. Clearly a couple attempted bats are painted on there, and other things, including a question mark.... hmm?? Also, on the 2nd night, the last thing they shot was a scene out on a sidewalk with a huge box out there..... full of black masks that were being handed out to everyone... which explains the first night scene. Last night, Batwoman was filming a few blocks down the street from me on a very rare Monday night/Tuesday early morning. An interior scene started off their day inside a club. I dont know what, if any cast were in it. Later, they moved to a back alley behind the club to shoot a couple scenes in the back. First, a scene with Javicia Leslie as Ryan Wilder, this was the 1st time I had seen her as Ryan, and not Batwoman since my 1st sighting of her way back during the 1st episode. She was doing a scene with Camrus Johnson as Luke Fox. The scene simply had the pair standing in the middle of the alley having a talk, before Luke turns and walks away. That was it. After that, a scene was done with Camrus again, and an unknown actor. The scene seemed to be Luke trying to get his way into the club, with the man, who was presenting himself to appear like he was supposed to be a bouncer nodding his head at the door at one point, before Luke went thru the door. One thing I noticed several times on the set tonight, was crew members wearing Black Lives Matters hoodies. I asked a crew member later on where they came from, thinking maybe the studio ordered them for them from somewhere. But was told a crew member was making them for people asking. After a situation up here a few months ago where a producer got in trouble for demanding a crew member take their BLM attire off, I saw many in the industry here asking if there was any place locally that they could get some made out of support for the movement, and the crew member. Till today I hadnt seen it really though on any of the sets outside of a 1 off hat on one set. After that, it seemed they were moving locations, so I headed home. I HAD planned on calling it a night, but then was given reason to go back out & try the next scene when Wallis Day, the woman recently cast to replace the fired Ruby Rose, as Kate Kane said she was going to be on set in a tweet. When I got back, I found them setting up to film on a very small, almost unknown street to most, that runs under 1 of our bridges. The Batmobile was being prepped for the scene, I had seen it earlier in the evening parked on this street with a tarp over it, so I knew it would be there later. I took a few pics of it while they were preparing it to film, and was able to get a partial photo of the inside, and the cool techie screen in there. The scene had Javicia now dressed as Batwoman, doing a scene where she (and her stunt driver) is in the Batmobile, speeding along, and comes to a stop where a woman is standing in the middle of the road..... its Wallis Day, as Kate Kane. While many had seen photos of Wallis lately with blonde hair, it was unknown of her version of Kate would be blonde. Now we can confirm, she will be I never really got to see what Wallis did in the scene, only a short rehearsal of it. But it mostly seemed she just stood in front of the vehicle. I could hear Javicia speaking in the scene, but couldnt make out what she was saying. So is this the 1st encounter Ryan & Kate have? One thing is for certain, this was the 1st time Wallis was seen on set publicly since being cast. Thursday night I went to a Batwoman set a few blocks from my house. They were filming in an alley they filmed at a few weeks ago. This time, there were more cast on set than the first time there, as Javicia Leslie as Batwoman was joined by Camrus Johnson as Luke Fox, and Nicole Kang as Mary Hamilton were on set this night, along with the stunt team. This was the first set I had ever seen Camrus at where he was working (I did meet him in season 1 at a set, but he wasnt working that night, just walking by). This was also the first set I had been at where Nicole was working since the pilot episode. In an early evening scene, they did stunts. The scene they did had Batwoman fall from about 6-8 stories up. They did that several times, each time, having the stunt end shortly before hitting bottom. Then later, they did 1 take of the stunt where the impact actually happened (which I missed because I didnt expect it... but I heard the impact after it happened, and was met with a sizable cheer from the crew) After they did that scene, they brought in the Batmobile & parked it immediately in front of the vehicle she crashed into. There was then a black van put in front of the Batmobile. From there they did the second part of this scene, with Luke & Mary running over to Batwoman, who was laid out flat on top of the vehicle she crashed into. The team grabs Batwoman, and carries her back to the van and puts Batwoman in the back. Then the pair do some weird scene that seems like they were excited/confused or something, to be honest I didnt fully get it. All I know is Mary does a weird little hop step then runs back towards where the crash was, while Luke goes towards the drivers seat of the van. So how did Batwoman fall? Who nearly killed her? Will this be the start of seeing Luke & Mary in the field more? Shortly after that, Javicia went to lunch break. About half an hour after that they let Camrus and Nicole go on lunch, and I left the set. I had considered going back for post-lunch filming, but I didnt. So thats all I have to report on for this set. One observation I noticed during the night is, the back of the Batmobile opens up. I mean I guess it makes sense, but hadnt seen it till that night. I also added 1 photo in, so you can get an idea how far away I am shooting from. The little yellow square is the ENTIRE area of their filming area. There is also some photos I added of a map of Gotham that was on a bus shelter there that they clearly were planning to use on a later shoot tha ti missed. With the announcement earlier this week from The CW that Batwoman would officially be joining the schedule of shows for the network this fall, it seemed like a good time to finally work on my blog post for the filming I saw done here. This production was kind of tough to track down over the 2-3 weeks they were here filming the pilot earlier this year. But I did catch up to them at 1 location on multiple nights. The Vancouver Art Gallery is used often for filming. Almost every production has filmed there. On the first night, they did an exterior shoot down in front of the gallery in the early evening. The scene saw a lot of Gothams elite going into an event that Mayor Akins was seemingly hosting, as massive banners saying “Mayor Akins” were hanging off the building. In front of the heavily guarded entrance for the event there was a CROWS Security truck at one point, along with dozens of protesters holding up a variety of signs in support of Batman. This sets the stage for the scene to clearly be from in the past, prior to when Batwoman comes to town as the hero of the city. But, the signs also indicate Batman hasn't been around much of late. Will we ever find out why? Will this be one of the seasons main stories to solve? Or will the Batwoman writing team just gloss over it, and shove it aside, and alienate the majority of Batwoman fans who come into her story through the more recognizable Batman by never paying off the acknowledgement of his existence? Cool extra thing throughout the shoot was, the use of the "Bat signal" in the sky in various spots. Much to everyone who was there watchings disappointment, it is nothing like the machine shown in the show. It is a far smaller lens, and more of a tube, with the Bat logo deep inside the tube, and not on the lens, to make the logo look bigger in the sky. On the final night, there seemed to be even less to see, as there was no exterior shoot going on, except a really small one on 1 side of the building that I almost missed because of the strategically planted tree that mostly covered the angle unless you are walking right through the narrow space it was shooting. I had seen it shortly before, but there was just a stand in up there at the time, and I didn't see any crew set up to shoot, so I mistakenly passed it off as maybe just a crew member standing there. A very small unit (literally a camera person and 3 other crew to cover off the area from people stepping into it did a shot that they might have done multiple times for all I know, but I sadly only caught them on the very last take. It had Ruby Rose staring down off a makeshift perch they had built just for the scene. The light on her was so bright, my photos basically looked like I photographed a ghost standing there. But once she walked away from it I saw it was her, but she would never come back for another take there, so that was all I saw of Batwoman actually shooting that night, and it was really just as Kate Kane. Some of the cast were on set throughout the two nights. But it is possible more than what I saw were there too, as much of what was shot was up on the rooftop during a rooftop party scene. Ruby Rose – Kate Kane / Batwoman Elizabeth Anweis – Catherine Hamilton Kane Nicole Kang – Mary Hamilton Meagan Tandy – Sophie Moore Rachel Skarsten – Alice Camrus Johnson – Luke Fox Dougray Scott – Colonel Jacob Kane Batwoman begins their 1st season on The CW October 6, 2019. Here is the heavily criticized Batwoman trailer. Which has almost 400,000 dislikes, 83% dislikes to 17% likes, and a whopping 7% of all views received garnering a dislike vote. Good news for them, they have a few problems to fix their writing problems. Below there is my set of photos from that shoot. |
