I caught up with Supergirl filming episode 6x13, directed by a long time TV director Tawnia McKiernan (daughter of industry icon Stephen J. Cannell). On this day, the cast & crew were downtown inside the Vancouver Convention Centre during the day, and at night, shooting 2 scenes in Jack Pool Plaza. The scenes included Melissa Benoist as Supergirl, David Harewood as Martian Manhunter, Chyler Leigh as Sentinel, Staz Nair as William Dey, and Azie Tesfai as Guardian. There was also a currently unknown woman, and a currently unknown teenager/young adult male. After it got dark, they had 2 different units running, almost at times overlapping each other a bit. At one of the plaza, there was a scene where William saves the young male from something, then Sentinel comes in immediately & fends whatever it is off while William rushes the other character away from the scene. Unfortunately, that night, (and really the night before too), the angles I had for that scene did not produce very good photos, so I scrapped pretty much everything I shot at that end of the plaza... although this night there were a couple less terrible shots than most compared to the day before. At the other end of the plaza, they had a scene with Supergirl, Martian Manhunter and an unknown girl doing a scene, then they did more of the scene, this time with Sentinel there too.... then a bit later, with Guardian there as well. In the scene, they are asking the unknown girl, who the night before seemed to be angry at the super friends, but was now trying to work with them it seemed, how to stop the lightning storm that she seemed to create. She yells out some sciency jargon towards the team, and then they disperse to take care of it, with MM & Supergirl flying off, while Sentinel and Guardian go to do something on the ground. A later scene had Sentinel with Guardian, doing a scene where Sentinel is down on the ground with a wand of sometime, trying to do something, while Guardian is protecting her with her shield as she does whatever it is shes doing. After that, they did a couple very short takes with Guardian, Sentinel, and Supergirl back out there for like 2 or 3 takes of a scene, and they then wrapped for the week. All of the scenes had various lights around the plaza blinking on & off to simulate lightning through the shooting, which is why at times some photos are dark, then suddenly some are quite bright. I have other set photos from the day before HERE. Video will come later in May on my YOUTUBE CHANNEL. So check in there for those later on. On this day, the cast & crew were out in the middle of a downtown street in the middle of the day filming a scene where the heroes were out front of a hospital. I was admittedly not there for long, as their schedule on this day really caught me off guard, and thus, I missed a good chunk of their day. With another film unit for another show close by that was just starting, I stayed for 4 or 5 takes of this scene and left. The scene included Melissa Benoist as Supergirl, David Harewood as Martian Manhunter, Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers / Sentinel, Nicole Maines as Dreamer, and Jesse Rath as Brainiac 5. Along with them was the double for Azie Tesfai as Guardian. The scene had the heroes walking into the scene, while Guardian was in the middle of the street beside an unknown actor. The heroes walk towards her, while the patients at the hospital applaud. Wish I could give you more details to what the scene meant, but I was not there long enough to get much info on it. I did find out from a fan that earlier in the day, a scene was done with Guardian standing up on the roof of the building they had pretending to be a hospital. On this day, the cast & crew were in a a couple alleys across the street from each other in downtown Vancouver during the day, then out on Richards Street for a short night shoot. In the daytime, they had 2 units working at the same time, and director Ramsey was bouncing back & forth between units. On 1 side, they were doing scenes in the same alley as yesterdays shoot (that report is HERE), with the towncar there.... but unsure what exactly they filmed, as the scene was mostly not visible yesterday. On the other side, they were preparing a scene with the unknown woman from yesterday & her security guards, getting chased by Azie Tesfai (and her stunt double at times) as Kelly Olsen dressed differently than she was just the day before, as she had the more James Olsen Guardian attire than the outfit she was in the day prior. Thus, it seems Kelly will get her new Guardian outfit sometime in episode 6X12. Kelly wasnt the only character chasing the baddie though. Guardian was joined by director Ramsey, as he was on set in John Diggle attire. No sign of a Green Lantern outfit sadly. But now we know that episode 6x12 appears to be the episode he will be in for his Supergirl appearance. In the scene, the two heroes run down the alley after the baddies. While Guardian runs after the mystery woman, Diggle is stopped by her two security guys, and he has to fight them off. At times, Azie was playing Guardian for the scene where she probably had to do some speaking parts, at other times, her double was doing the scene. Same went for David, who also had double duty of directing, and his stunt double was there for some of the scenes as well, as you can see in a couple fo the photos where David is watching his double rehearse the stunt fights, so that when David came in, he would know what he had to do (even as Director, you need to still see it in action so you can just get the flow of it in person, as it might not be how you envisioned it when you were thinking of it on paper). After the sun went down, they did two very short shoots. First a scene with 2 kids walking through a parking lot, then a big bright flashing light goes off, and the two kids collapse, while background panic & run away. Then just around the corner, a scene was done with just Azie dressed as Kelly this time. She walks out of an Ethiopian Restaurant that was named "Selamanit Ethiopian" with a bag of take out food, and is on the phone to someone named "Joey" when suddenly a loud boom goes off, and she seems to no longer be able to talk to "Joey" as Kelly says in a concerned voice the name, as if trying to figure out if the person was still on the line. Unfortunately, when the scene was shooting, Kelly was walking too fast for my camera to catch her ins tride under the Restaurant sign, but I did get a couple photos of her near it between takes, as did she. With Azie also writing this episode, I have to feel the addition of the Ethiopian Restaurant was a choice she made, to show off her East African heritage in the scene in some way. Azie even posted on her Instagram as a story, a little teaser pic of the "receipt" that was attached to the bag in the episode. Since its an Instagram story, I've also added the image at the end of my gallery, in case you see this blog after it expires. Video will come later in April on my YOUTUBE CHANNEL. On this day, the cast & crew were in an alley in downtown Vancouver that has been used by practically everyone at some point. The scene had a large portion of the cast on set, as Melissa Benoist as Supergirl, David Harewood as Martian Manhunter, Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers/ Sentinel, Jesse Rath as Brainiac 5, Nicole Maines as Dreamer, and this episodes writer, Azie Tesfai as Kelly Olsen.... errr... I mean Guardian! Yep, the rumours of Kelly becoming Guardian this season have come to fruition, as she was sporting a new black & gold outfit today, and even had a matching coloured bike to go with it with a license play that reads "AZI G2", which clearly has the little not of the actresses 1st name slightly modified, unsure if the G2 has any meaning yet. Chylers character was also sporting a new bike, as her license plate said "TRI M3" which could be interpreted to say "Try Me". Also on set was 1 currently unknown blonde woman, and a man who was her driver, along with some background people. As usual, something bad was happening in National City. This time, it seemed that a clean up crew was busy working, trying to clean up the debris from a destroyed building, which had a sign saying "Ormfell Building" on it, which so far I havent been able to connect to any DC lore, but theres almost always a nod with the naming of things. In the scene, the unknown woman, gets driven through the group of cleaners to a spot where she stops, gets out of the car, where she is confronted by Supergirl, Martian Manhunter, Brainiac 5, Dreamer, Guardian & Sentinel. The woman then puts her hands spread to the side, and all the people except for the heroes fall to the ground, as if they had died. The heroes continue talking to her.... and that was more or less the majority of the scene. They changed angles a few times, so I dont know if the angle changes added to the scene or not, as it isnt always consisting of the whole cast. In between takes, the cast were pretty relaxed, even getting caught by this fan dancing between takes. Later, Nicole was busy taking a load of photos of Azie with her new bike, then later, Nicole, Chyler, and Jesse were busy taking photos of Azie posing against a wall, and they comparing their photos together. Almost forgot about the 1 break when Chyler was practicing boxing, and David Harewood was volunteering to be her training partner while both in full on superhero costumes. The cast & crew are back for another day of filming today. Probably right now as I am posting this, they are feverishly at work, prepping, or just starting to shoot today. Lastly, I am trying out a couple new watermarking styles in the next while. Today, trying this very wide, all encompassing watermark, that is more transparent, but covers the image more. Let me know if you like this better for group shots, as opposed to the old method of putting multiple watermarks across the photo in all directions to cover everyone. I caught up with Supergirl filming episode 6x11, directed by Glen Winter, at George Wainborn Park in Vancouver earlier this week for 2 conseuctive days. This is the day 2 set report. Day 1 report can be found HERE. On the 2nd day, they were filming in the park area again. This time, with more cast than the day prior. Melissa Benoist as Supergirl, Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers/Sentinel, David Harewood as Martian Manhunter, Nicole Maines as Dreamer, Jesse Rath as Brainiac 5, Thomas Lennon as Mr. Mxyzptlk, and Peta Sergeant as currently unknown character, but most commonly guessed theory so far is Mrs. Nyxlygsptlnz. I was there for the scenes before their lunch break. They started with the 5 main cast all handcuffed to large tinfoil poles. The scene generally consisted of showing the actors struggling with the restraints. If there was any dialogue in this part of the scene, I never heard it. After a while, they removed the posts, and the cast were now taking up combative positions. Brainy & Martian Manhunter were holding some sort of pistols, while Sentinel had the Phantom Zone projector for a bit, then had a gun later, when Supergirl picked up the projector. Dreamer was armed with just her hands. Behind & beside the camera was Thomas, and further back Peta, reading their parts of the scenes, while those in front of the camera acted out their actions. They then went on break. After the break, the scene had all 7 actors in front of the camera, continuing on from the earlier scene, and a couple of photographers who were there in that late afternoon set were kind enough to send me a few of their photos for this later set. Video will come later in April on my YOUTUBE CHANNEL. So check in there for those later on. I caught up with Supergirl filming episode 6x11, directed by Glen Winter, at George Wainborn Park in Vancouver earlier this week for 2 conseuctive days. This is the day 1 set report. Day 2 will be a couple more days. There was a lot to go over. This park is the same location that Supergirl used back in season 2 for a scene between Superman and Metallo that I shot HERE On this day, they started out on the street surrounding the park. When I first showed up up the morning, they had a pile of debris, smashed up cars, including at least 1 on fire, and emergency vehicles scattered along a 1 block stretch of area. Shortly after I got there, they did a take of the scene, and it included multiple large explosions, with fireballs reaching about 10-15 feet into the air. Eventually, after several completitions of that stunt sequence, which included people running around in a panic, including emergency people. They then had the casts stunt doubles come in to react to the explosions for a couple takes. Then the cast came in to shoot a take with 1 explosion, instead of the 2 they had been using earlier. Melissa Benoist as Supergirl, Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers.... wait nope, scratch that, Sentinel (if you watched lhe season premiere, and look at her left arm in these shots, shes sporting a new logo on there), David Harewood as Martian Manhunter, Nicole Maines as Dreamer, and Jesse Rath as Brainiac 5 were on set for the scene. Also spotted at the set was an actress that at that time I did not know the name of, and I never saw IF she was in the scene (BUT have to assume she was since she was there during the filming), in the recap below this set of photos I state who the actress is, and who she COULD be in the show. There was a couple different scenes early on that did not seem to show much of what they were doing from the angles I could find on the far end of the street. With the curved style of the street, and all the vehicles scattered about in the background, seeing exactly WHAT was going on for the earlier scene, was almost impossible. It just consisted of the 5 of them walking to the front of a minivan, then out of my view to confront something. When I later moved to the other end of the street, I was able to get a bit of a view of the group facing a bit my direction, but still could not see who they were confronting. Next, they did a scene, a very short one (or at least short when I noticed it maybe?) where Supergirl is mimicking that she is being choked, as the heroes rush into support her. Again, no clue what made that happen, or how it ended. They did not seem to film the scene for long, and moved on to setting up for the next one. While they were setting up for the next scene, Nicole wandered off to an area with more space to practice doing a stunt with a rope. I never did see her actually do the scene WITH it. After that scene, they did a scene with them facing back in the direction I started my day, but with all the vehicles there, I had to find a side angle to get a shot of the 5 of them. So in almost every shot I took, there was almost always 1 or more of them blocked by their co-stars. At one point Alex has a bazooka for some reason. Then later she did a scene where she seemed to have a baton or something like that in her hand. They then had just Dreamer & Brainy doing a scene together where Dreamer is pretending shes pulling on a rope, and getting dragged along, and Brainy comes rushing to her side with the cannister he was carrying around throughout parts of the day with him. In it, Brainy yells out "Dreamer no" before he rushes over to her, and when he gets beside her, she yells at him "what are you doing?". I frankly wouldnt be shocked if I forgot something in all of this. It was a chaotic day.... and it wasnt even over.... I went for a walk for a bit at one point to find a place to recharge my cameras battery (and failed). On my walk, I found some of the set decoration that will be in the background during the earlier scenes, and, conveniently was part of a wall they had built around some of their equipment and catering trucks. So I took a few photos of those.
Later on, they moved down into the park, a scene was shot down on the grass. It had Melissa on set in her Supergirl outfit, along with Thomas Lennon, returning as Mr. Mxyzptlk, and a woman that I did not immediately know, but has been ID'ed as Peta Sergeant by a couple observant fans. What her character COULD be, is still unknown. But some speculated it could be Mrs. Nyxlygsptlnz, which is Mxys wife in the comics. If it is, then something isnt going well in their marriage, because they did not seem to be getting along in the scene. The scene starts with Supergirl & Mxy jumping in, and they are searching for someone. At the time I was having trouble figuring out why Supergirl kept yelling out "Myxly" when he was standing right beside her as they walked along, but after being told of the other character "Nyxly" seems more probable. In the scene, Petas character has a round orb (I called it a "large marble" at the set, because "orb" escaped my mind) that she shoves in the direction of where Mxy and Supergirl are, and Mxy moves towards her, before Supergirl tries intervening, and playing peacekeeper. She yells at Petas character "Wait, wait, we can work this out" as she moves closer to where Mxy was, which was about 1/2 way between where Supergirl & Peta were positioned. That was all I saw of that scene, and that was the end of the shoot for that day. There will be more, as I have some content for day two coming this week(end) as well. Video will come later in April on my YOUTUBE CHANNEL. So check in there for those later on. Some of the videos will be on the Patreon page for video tier members THIS WEEK, and more coming for a while (I have a few to work through). If you are confused on how many you can post, ASK FIRST, and I will let you know. I caught up with Supergirl shooting just outside of downtown Vancouver, at an area that the locals know as "the old Molson Brewery", but now is just a mostly abandoned factory. This was the same location that my 1st shots late last year were of Superman & Lois filming a night shoot of Tyler Hoechlin in his new suit. As with that set, I saw almost none of the actual filming here. The only scene I actually DID see, was a scene with a bunch of guest actors getting out of a panel van & walking towards a building. Thats it. But the bigger thing I did see obviously that day, was David Harewood, and his stunt double on set in their Martian Manhunter outfits, as well as Jennifer Clarke in her Supergirl outfit. But that was all secondary to the thing all the fans were most anticipating. Melissa Benoist was on set as Supergirl publicly for the first time since she gave birth to a baby, and since the pandemic shut down production less than 2 weeks short of a year ago (you can see their last public shoot set HERE). At one point they were using a drone to shoot a scene, but again, I saw nothing of what the drone was seeing..... wish I had its view. The first photos of Melissa Benoist since March 12, 2020 on set outside of the studio. Since the shows return from the hiatus that was caused by the ongoing pandemic, the cast & crew of Supergirl have been rarely on location, and to date, none of those locations seemed to be with Melissa (if she had 1 prior, no one found it). So for the eager fans of the actress, this was their 1st real chance to see her out & about in a year. On Thursday, the production moved to New Westminster, about 1/2 hour outside of downtown Vancouver for a scene at an autobody shop. They were using their courtyard to shooting a scene (thankfully with the gate open) with a huge rig that had been torn apart through the middle. Again Supergirl & Martian Manhunter were in the scene. It starts with Martian Manhunter standing infront of the torn hull of the container, Supergirl then "lands" and walks over. They talk about it, before MM leaves for a moment, then comes back with a piece of paper. The pair read the paper. In 1 take MM did a jump up as if to fly away, but I never saw him do it in another take, so I dont know if he did it as an improvisation, or if he was asked to do it once by the director. But it wasnt something I saw in any of the other takes they did. This was of course the first ACTUAL location scene anyone would see Melissa Benoist shoot this season. Video will come later this month. Sorry for the heavier than usual watermarks. But some of the fans from this fandom like wasting their time removing them, posting them, and losing their social media account over it. Weird hobby, but, I thought I would make it at least a little harder for them this time. Be sure to thank them for the heavier than usual watermarks.
