Early today, the cast & crew shot scenes for season 4 episode 1 at the Vancouver Art Gallery (just across the street in fact from where they shot some of the season 3 finale). On set today was Melissa Benoist, Jesse Rath and Mehcad Brooks. This post is going to focus on the later scene with Melissa & Jesse. (the earlier scene photos will be added later). The scene featured here included Melissa Benoist dressed up as her lead character Supergirl. This was the first time for Melissa to be on set as the Woman Of Steel this season in public. After a lengthy Broadway run that saw her not return to the show till a few weeks into the shows filming schedule, she had some catching up to do. Today Supergirl was filming a scene with Jesse Rath as Brainiac 5 where she lands in a crater, before getting up, speaking to Brainy for a moment & then flying away again as Brainy & spectators look on There was another scene a bit later that saw Supergirl handing a balloon to a girl who had her balloon float away from her. They then went inside to shoot scenes inside the Vancouver Art Gallery. Also on set today, was David Harewood. But not to film as Martian Manhunter or J'onn J'onzz, but to shadow the director so he can get the hang of how to direct for an episode he'll direct later this season. When I have even MORE time, there will be a bit of video from todays shoot to add as well. Back in early May, they shot scenes for the season 3 finale at the Vancouver Art Gallery (just across the street in fact from where they shot some of the season 2 finale). On set at this location (they actually had two locations going on at once on this day) was a notable portion of the cast. Melissa Benoist as Supergirl, Mehcad Brooks as The Guardian, Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers, Chris Wood as Mon El, Amy Jackson as Saturn Girl and Erica Durance as Alura Zor El. You can see still photos from this shoot HERE, or the other shoot that day HERE Below is a quick video from this shoot of them doing 1 of the takes. I will have 2 more videos form this set to post, if there is enough traffic to justify editing it. If there isnt, I might post them on my youtube channel sometime down the road. But it wont be any time soon. Back in early May, I found the Supergirl cast & crew shooting some scenes at the Vancouver Art Gallery in downtown Vancouver. Just across the street from where they shot the season 2 finale scenes I posted last year in fact. Of course, Canadagraphs was on the scene to get you these shots. As I posted in my earlier blog post here, many of the cast were ons et this day. In the mid day-scenes they had Melissa Benoist as Supergirl, , Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers, Chris Wood as Mon El, Erica Durance as Alura Zor El, and Mehcad Brooks double as The Guardian. Only differences in cast from the early morning shoot were Amy Jackson, as she wrapped her role on the series after that early morning scene, and Mehcad Brooks, who was no longer working at this location for some reason, despite the fact his character was still there. The scene seemed to be a follow up to the morning scene. Where the earlier scene had people running around in a panic as the heroes showed up, this scene had the crowd stop to give them a round of applause for what I can only assume is saving the day. I managed to nab autographs from Amy Jackson as she left, Chyler Leigh and Erica Durance. Of course, Melissa & Chris, didnt stop for anyone., while Mehcad managed to make a clean exit of the set when leaving without anyone but a couple regulars noticing. There was another scene shot even later, after I left. But it had been a long enough day for me. So I called it a day after this. What do all these scenes mean for the finale? Who knows? Do they have any impact on who is & isnt coming back for season 4? Who knows? Does it explain in any way how they will film the first couple episodes without Melissa? Hard to say. Supergirl will start ups eason 4 production in approximately 3 weeks, but the shows star will not be around for the beginning, as she is doing a Broadway play till early/mid August. The scene didnt really explain a lot. It seemed as if the scene was mostly Supergirl, Mon El, Saturn Girl and Alura arriving at a scene of chaos with Alex & The Guardian meeting up with them a couple seconds later, seemingly already on the scene. A little while later, they did a scene where it seemed like Supergirl was flying away, but they only did a couple takes of that one. The one thing that was clear, they were all there looking at something they were not happy about. In a later scene, most of these cast, minus Amy Jackson & Mehcad (although his double shot the scene) did more shooting. I will have a post on that scene later on this week. If you have not seen the episode, and do not want to see or read possible spoilers about it prior to seeing it, do not continue reading the article or viewing the photos below. . . . last warning . . Last week I caught the crew of Supergirl working on their portion of the 4 episode Arrowverse crossover episode. After some earlier scenes including their cast, they did a scene later in the day wth members of The Flash and Arrow for a scene at a wedding.... but who was getting married? Early in the day, before they started shooting, they had changed the sign at St Andrews Wesley Church to read "ST PAUL LUTHERAN CHURCH" THE WEDDING OF BARRY ALLEN & IRIS WEST CONGRATULATIONS TO THE HAPPY COUPLE" After I tweeted that, they changed the sign literally 10 minutes later, changing Barry Allen & Iris west to be a jumbled mixture of their letters mixed up & some placed upside down. Of course, when they went to go shoot the scenes, they had to change them back anyways.... so dont know why they even bothered. Well, unless youve been disconnected from the internet for the past month or so, you likely already have seen the promotional poster for the cross over event featuring right smack dab in the middle, Barry Allen & Iris West in a wedding ceremony. On this day, they filmed scenes for Barry & Iris ATTEMPTING to get married.... yes, I said attempting. See, this was their first attempt, which gets stopped after an attack by villains. Will they EVER get married?? That answer can be found in this blog post on The Flash blog section. On set for this shoot was The Flash stars Candice Patton as Iris West in her wedding dress, Jesse L Martin as Joe West, and Patrick Sabongui as David Singh. Also on set was Arrow star Emily Bett Rickards as Felicity Smoak. So where are the rest of the expectant characters, namely Barry Allen? Probably battling whatever forces are trying to stop this wedding. The scene they shot was Iris, Joe, David & Felicity guiding wedding guests out of the church as flashes of light went off inside the church. They did 3 total takes of the scene, then moved on. After that, they did a stunt running scene with some of the guests where they were pretending to dodge, or get hit by things falling from the sky. The 2017 Arrowverse crossover episodes, all titled "Crisis On Earth X" have been filming through most of October in Vancouver, and last week I caught up with the Supergirl crew shooting part of their segment of the 4 episode event. On this day, they shot a variety of scenes. In the morning they shot a scene on a roof with a Earth X character named "Overgirl" that I missed due to their scheduling and other commitments I had. When I got there in the early afternoon they were prepping to shoot a scene out in front of the the St. Andrews Wesley Church. The scene sees Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers and Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers having a chat when Legends Of Tomorrow star Caity Lotz as Sara Lance arrives, says a few words to Alex, before going into the church, leaving Kara to tease & grill Alex about the clear flirtatious conversation the pair seemingly had. Its been strongly rumoured the 2 characters may be hooking up in the episode after the very publicly posted departure of Floriana Lima as Maggie Sawyer leaves Alex's love life with a vacancy, much to the growing fanbase of fans who like Maggie & Alex together. After they shot this scene, all 3 actresses wrapped their day there, and left, making way for the production to prepare for their final scenes of the day, on the other side of the church that didnt even have any Supergirl cast in it, as The Flash and Arrow stars were on hand for the shoot, Many of you may already have seen the youtube video I posted of their rehearsal of this scene where Melissa goes a bit off script near the end. Back in August, I found the Supergirl set shooting some scenes in a park in the Coal Harbour area of downtown Vancouver. On set that day when I got there was Katie McGrath, Odette Annable and Mehcad Brooks. The trio were shooting a scene at a stage area set up to look like a press conference. Behind the stage was a large LCorp sign, and scattered throughout the crowd of extras were signs demanding justice/vengeance against LCorp. Directed by Arrowverse regular director, famed comic book legend, and actor Kevin Smith, the scene saw Katie as Lena Luthor step up to the podium with Mehcad as James Olsen and Odette as Reign beside her. Lena then gave a speech where she tells the crowd that she sees their signs, and is going to step down as the head of LCorp, but before the crowd has even a moment to revel in the statement, gun shots ring out and James dives to push Lena to safety, while Reign moves off in the other direction. A bit later we see another scene being shot. This time, Supergirl herself..... errr I mean mild mannered reporter Kara Danvers, is on set. Melissa Benoist joined the trio for the later scenes.
In the later scenes, we see Kara standing up in the middle of the crowd while everyone goes fleeing for safety. Meanwhile up on the stage, we find out that James got shot in the arm. they also filmed a quick scene of a girl in a hoodie being apprehended (I'm assuming the shooter?) in the middle of the crowd. During breaks in the latter half of the shooting day, the cast were preoccupied with meeting with a couple little girls from the Make A Wish foundation. While I decided it was not the best time to photograph cast, some of the other photographers there did. I couldnt resist though, a shot of them snapping the clapper board with Melissa during one take. The cast were nothing short of exceptional in how much patience & time they took with the kids. While everyone that goes to sets would expect nothing less from the other 3, I think most of us were all at the least a little surprised to see the usually impossible to get an interaction with Melissa spending so much time with them. It was nice to see her being nice to someone at the set for a change. The girls also got to call rolling once, and got to hang out with Melissa to watch while the others did a scene Melissa wasnt in at that point. Throughout the day, director Kevin Smith went around to crew, and at least twice to the fans watching and handed out Tim Hortons Timbits (for those not from Canada, basically, donut holes).
