Early this month, the cast & crew of Superman & Lois were filming in downtown Vancouver for scenes of the penultimate episode of the entire series. This was the ONLY known downtown shoot in the entire final season....and they were only there for 4 hours of filming, which in the filming world, is practically nothing, as a usual day sees 8-12 hours of filming. That is 100% a budget decision. Downtown is the most expensive area of the Lower Mainland to rent. On this day, they were filming a scene just off of West Georgia, at a place thats been used for The Flash a couple times, and was less than 200 feet from where we first saw Tyler Hoechlin as Superman way back in season 2 of Supergirl. This time however, it was not the Man Of Steel out & about, it was his better half, Bitsie Tulloch as Lois Lane doing a scene with new cast member Yvonne Chapman as Amanda McCoy, an ally of Lex Luthor. The scene is set in Metropolis, and sees Lois confront Amanda outside of Luthorcorp. (I missed getting a photo of the Luthorcorp logo, but it was out there somewhere.) The scene has the pair talk for less than a minute, and that was it. Thats all they filmed for the entirety of season 4 in downtown Vancouver....and then they packed up and left forever. I WILL have some episode 4x10, the series finale, set photos & videos coming up in a couple weeks. I also have a few pics of the wrap party of the cast leaving, I may do a blog for that too....but we'll see. Video will beup on my YOUTUBE CHANNEL in the near future. So check in there for some video content. Superman & Lois season 4 will airs in the fall of 2024 on The CW in the U.S. You can get exclusive first looks on our Patreon ahead of these blog posts as low as $2 a month for photos, and $5 a month for videos. THIS BLOG POST IS FOR "SUPERMAN AND LOIS" SEASON 3 EPISODE 13, AND MAY CONTAIN POSSIBLE SPOILERS FOR THE SEASON. If you are confused on how many you can post, ASK FIRST, and I will let you know. Earlier this month, the cast & crew of Superman & Lois were filming scenes at the 200 Granville Plaza. the episode is being directed by Gregory Smith. The scenes shot on this day included Tyler Hoechlin as Clark Kent, and Elizabeth Tulloch as Lois Lane. In a daytime scene, and in a later scene Tyler was Superman. When I first showed up to set that day, I took a look around while they were setting up the first shot, and found a couple set pieces, including one for "Centennial Station" at "Centennial Plaza", on the Centennial Station sign, had a bunch of transit routes on it, which I found funny they all were just labelled "Station #__", instead of a specific location like most city routes would be. But the lines the routes were on, all had specific names. There were some generic ones like "Waterfront, Centennial, Riverfront, Central, Southview, & East Side", but there were 4 other lines on the map, with "Siegel, Shuster, O'Neil, Maggin", which happen to be the surnames of Joe Shuster, one of the co-creators of Superman Jerry Siegel, the other co-creator of Superman Dennis O'Neil, a long time writer for DC Comics Elliot S. Maggin, another long time DC Comics writer. Also seen on set, was 1 sign for a "G.A.N.G. Busters" initiative. I didnt think a lot about it, till someone told me theres a character of the picture on that sign, by the name of.... you guessed it "Gangbuster". At the first location, under neath, & across the street of the night scene location, Clark & Lois are walking along a street in Metropolis, with reporter badges on. One thing I over heard to give context on the scene, is they are there investigating a murder. A bit later, they moved above where they started to a walk way, and Clark & Lois have a short talk, before the pair leave arm in arm. A bit later, they moved across the street to the 200 Granville location for the night scene. This location has been used in the Arrowverse a few times in the past, including Supergirl season 3 premiere, The Flash season 5 finale, as well as The Flash season 4 finale. In this scene, they had Superman there, and he was looking a little different. Despite the fact it didnt rain more than a brief sprinkle the entire night, they had his hair looking very damp. The scene has a bunch of extras standing around in an area called "Centennial Square", Superman then shows up, by landing on the ground. Everyone looks at him, as he assures them everything will be okay. At 1 point, the director told the onlookers to look at him as if it was the 1st time they saw him, which I found weird since he used to live in Metropolis full time in the past. Before he can do much more than tell them everything will be fine, something is in the sky, crashing towards the earth, and he leaps off to take it on....and thats all there really was. After that Tyler wrapped. Weird part was, when they wrapped, there was 30 or so onlookers watching them film. As soon as they called wrap, EVERYONE in unison, with the exception of me and another fan, left, like as if they were under some type of mind control. It was wild. This gave me and that fan the opportunity, with a suddenly much smaller crowd, to get a photo with Tyler in the costume. He took a bunch of photos with crew members first, and said some good byes to many of them. I asked him if he had heard anything on if they have been told a date to return for season 4, and he said not yet, but assumes it will be about the same time of year as season 3 started. Then he left, for the final time that season. After Tyler wrapped, the crew moved down to the street below where they were filming, to do another scene that had no cast in it. This is where I think the most interesting stuff of the evening happened, even though there was nothing to see, because of what was HEARD, and what I saw at 1 point off set. They shot a scene with a bunch of extras walking around, then suddenly stopping to look at the centre of an intersection. The directors comments directing how the crowd should react is the key point for this part of the post. He tells the fans "you see Superman crawl out of the hole, he looks injured"., the next part of the scene, he then tells them "something else is coming out of the hole, its a monster", the last part is he tells the crowd to follow a green laser pointer on a wall up into the air, to represent these two characters going up high into the air. At one point, they filmed 1 singular take of a tripod set up right in the middle of the intersection. I am unsure if it is supposed to represent something, or if its a piece of tech they use for a specific look. But they only shot it once. The rest of the time was spent on these extras, and 1 bit of filming of looking down a road at traffic driving. NOW, why does this part of the evening mean something. Its what I happened to read earlier in the evening. On the storyboard, I saw 1 panel that had 1 specific line & a drawing interpretation "his spikes grow", with a rough drawing of a monster with jagged spikes growing out of him (I almost never show photos I ever get of any information I see that isnt ON set [aka - in front of the camera], but you clearly by now if you are a regular know my track record on things I see at a set). That is all I will say on the matter. IF you do not get the connection of the two parts there, I suppose you can just wait till the dozens of theory videos come out. But I suspect, after the reaction I got telling that story to two people, a lot of people will jump to this theory (once again) upon reading this. Video will come later on my YOUTUBE CHANNEL. So check in there for those later on in a few weeks. Some of the videos will be on the Patreon page for video tier members in the next couple weeks. Earlier this season, the cast & crew of Superman & Lois were filming scenes at the Vancouver Art Gallery. the episode is being directed by Elizabeth Henstridge. The scenes shot on this day included Tyler Hoechlin as Superman, and Elizabeth Tulloch as Lois Lane. Also on set was a currently unidentified actress, playing an unknown character. In the scene, the unidentified character is standing up on a ledge, then Lois comes in and talks to her, and she gets off the ledge, and seems to give Lois a hug or something. Then Superman shows up, talks to Lois, and they have a talk, that I was told by crew was "very emotional scene", before the pair hug. Also, before theres any confusion... the pics of him with something in his ear is NOT part of the scenes. Thats him listening to whatever he listens to in between takes before he has to shoot. I had kind of forgot about this set till this past week. So here it is, better late than never, right? Video will come later on my YOUTUBE CHANNEL. Yesterday, I caught up with the cast & crew of Superman & Lois shooting a scene out in Cloverdale (the town where their big Smallville downtown set is.... but this wasnt there, it was a few blocks away). They were filming scenes for the 1st episode of the season, directed by The Flash star Tom Cavanagh. The episode title is "Closer". The scenes shot for this day included Elizabeth Tulloch as Lois Lane, and the recently recast Jonathan Kent character. Michael Bishop, was filming on set in his first public shoot since getting the role. In the first scene, the pair were driving 1 of the new trucks that the Kent boys grandad gave them at the end of last season down a street in Smallville, with Lois in the passengers side clearly giving him lessons. They had the truck up on a flatbed, so they could film the scene with camera crew propped up on the side of the truck. At 1 point I guess he hits the brake too hard, and they both lunge forward and back. This causes frustration for Jonathan. Eventually, the pair continue on their practice. A bit later, we see them now outside the Smallville DMV. Now inside a light blue minivan/small truck type vehicle. Jonathan in the drivers seat, with Lois talking to him through the window. Behind Lois is another car driving by, stopping and going a few times. I found it kind of comical that they had to get a stunt driver for this, and his entire job was to drive poorly for the scene. A man then walks up towards the car, it is Jonathans former football coach, played by Danny Wattley. Coach Gaines gets in the passengers seat, Lois leaves, and Jonathan starts up the car. I think at 1 point I heard Danny being given direction to spill more coffee, so I suspect Jonathan causes the vehicle to jerk suddenly as he did while driving with Lois. The first half of my day there the crew could not have been much nicer. They were asking me if I got anything good, 1 even thanksed me for covering the show, and 1 even was nice enough to tell me the current scene probably wouldnt be too good for photos, but after that they would be filming down the street & you might get better photos there. However, on the back half of it. Two different crew members decided all of a sudden LONG AFTER I had already got shots of those on set, they were going to try & stop me from getting photos. First off was a woman (seen in a couple of my photos in a red shirt & camo pants) who decided to use the always ineffective umbrella trick, and even coerced another staff member into doing it with her. I of course still got shots, as I show you below. Just dont bother crews. You are really only going to make me try more. Later was my friend at the end of the set in the yellow shirt, who was trying to pretend to be accidentally standing in my way the whole time. As you can see, he too was very very successful at his job. I found extra odd these two wannabe bodyguards were acting this way, since it was very clear the actors were in a good mood, and even smiled when they noticed I was shooting them. At 1 point Michael gives me a thumbs up in a video clip I have. Because of those crew members unneccesary rudeness, I opted to NOT go home right after they wrapped, and instead decided to follow them to the next location. I sometimes wonder if crews really want me to stick around, because the easiest way to do that is annoy me for no reason. After that scene ended, the production moved a 3 minute drive down the street, back to their downtown Smallville set at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds. I went on foot, and it took me about 30 minutes, as the front gates of it are on the far side of the fairgrounds. When I got there, the main street of the set seemed quiet, and inactive, so I suspected they were filming somewhere out of visual range, and I called it a day..... but not before taking a few general view photos of the set up for you all. I am sure by now you know there is more S&L content coming up from the very big public shoot in downtown Vancouver from yesterday at the time this blog went up. I will have that blog up later this week (maybe tomorrow? But more likely Fri or Sat). Video will come later on my YOUTUBE CHANNEL. So check in there for those later on in a few weeks. This morning & afternoon I went down to the Superman And Lois set that was in a park I was just in last week for Supergirl for a scene. This wasnt even the first time I have filmed Superman in this park, as they shot scenes for season 2 of Supergirl there with Superman on set here. Today they were shooting episode 1x14, the penultimate episode of the first season. The episode is directed by Alexandra "Lexi" La Roche. The scenes had Tyler Hoechlin as Superman, and Elizabeth Tulloch as Lois Lane, on set for an early scene. Also on set at the time was the Steel suit, but at the time I never saw who might be in it, and I didnt see it for more than 1 take I shot (and then later when I was looking at these photos noticed him just BARELY mixed into the middle of the crowd shot in the first shot). They then did a part of the scene with just Lois & the spectators where Lois takes a cops megaphone, and tells people to get out of there. In 1 take I noticed 2 people jump up like the way Superman does, then they crawled out of the way of the scene, but I dont know if this is supposed to be anyone, but I did take 1 photo there of the pair (although 1 had his back mostly to me). Later, they did a scene with Tyler, Wole Parks as John Henry Irons in the Steel outfit, and Stacey Farber as Leslie Larr. In that scene, Superman and Steel are standing facing Leslie, Steel is carrying a massive hammer that I thought was the one that Lois had in Elseworlds, but when I looked at it here on my computer, I noticed the colour is different. So I dont know if thats a Crisis change, or if this is a different hammer. In the scene Superman & Steel suddenly look off to the side, where it is implied something/someone is there, and Superman flies off. I picked up a couple details from just paying attention to what the crew were saying to background people for the crowd scenes to get them to react how they wanted. Leslie Larr gets electrocuted at some point, unsure if it is before, or after the scene I saw her shooting with Superman & Steel. Morgan Edge is there up in the air for 1 of the scenes. They also reference at one point a piece of dialogue where someone says "Same, he is here to help us". I would assume they are talking about General Lane in that moment, and I am led to believe its supposed to be Lois saying it, even though it was a crew member saying it to the crowd so they knew where in the scene they were. They had a bit more filming to do after that, which I think had to include stunts at some point, since there was supposed to be one from what I was told earlier on, and I saw Tylers stunt double there at one point. But I had been there for a few hours, and frankly, 3 or 4 crew members there were just being classless pricks (every crew has a couple.... on this day, they just happened to all be working together), and I decided I had more than enough. I COULD have got more, but really, I got more than I could have expected for the 5 or 6 hours I was there..... and hey, they are back there tomorrow (or tomorrow from the time I was writing this). On day 2 they continued shooting in the park.
While I was there (I had another set to work that day, so I spent less than an hour there), they did 2 scenes. First with Leslie Larr on top of Steel pummeling him with a series of punches. Later, they did a scene with Steel wielding his hammer, and swinging it around in battle. That was all I saw that day unfortunately, except for 1 moment where I saw Supermans stunt double walking around early on, suggesting at some point he probably had some stunt work to do. Video will come later on my YOUTUBE CHANNEL. So check in there for those later on in a few weeks. Some of the videos will be on the Patreon page for video tier members THIS WEEK. My other blog from the day before set is HERE. On this day, Tyler Hoechlin was dressed as Clark Kent, instead of Superman, and he was doing some scenes in an alley first. Early in the day they had him run down the alley, and simulate the classic shirt ripping scene, except for the fact he never ripped it open. A bit later, they moved to the corner where he starts his run, and has a scene where he is stepping out of a a phone booth, for the classic Superman idea of him changing in phone booths. When he steps out, he notices people rushing to, or away form something, and he stops a woman and asks her what is going on, she points up in the sky at something, says something to him, then goes on her way, leaving Clark there to stare up at it on his own. Later in the afternoon/evening, they moved up the street from there, and had a scene where Clark is standing on a street, looking at something in a newspaper, and trying to figure out where he is going. He tries to ask someone, but seems to fail, then just stands there, looking confused on where to go. Then they moved to the final scene of the day, where Clark is now joined by Bitsie Tulloch as Lois Lane. He has ner reporters notepad in her hand, and the pair are walking along. It felt very much like a 1st, or at most, very early interaction between them. One little detail I noticed when I was photographing parts of the set, is that the license plate has a 2004 expiration tag on it. So I would assume this scene is intended to be set around 2003/04. The filming was on a side street, not too far from where they shot the first public scene with him in the suit way back when. On this day, I found Tyler Hoechlin on set as Superman, along with Elizabeth Tulloch as Lois Lane in my 1st ever time seeing her on set, or at all. Also on set was a currently unknown actor as the villain of the episode. I believe the character is being called "Atom Man", but I wasnt entirely sure of that. One thing IS for certain, he was sporting some symbols on his chest that Arrowverse fans might take a 2nd look at. It looks like the symbol the Earth X villains (I wont use that specific word here) in the Crisis On Earth X cross over event. The scene plays out with the bad guy standing there, making people panic. Lois Lane is standing in the middle of it all, and suddenly Superman swoops in to deal with the villain. Then there is mostly a stand off. At one point the villain has a gun, but then puts his hands behind his head at one point. From the angle I was shooting it when he had his mask, and gun in hand, I never saw what he did with the gun when he moved his hands to his head. Curious moment happens during the interaction, as Superman in comes in, wearing his retro outfit that his mom made him that we see in the 1st episode of the series, he turns to Lois, and says "nice to meet you", and at another point says "are you okay?", as if he had not met her before. She replies back to him and I swear I thought I heard her call him "Mister Metropolis" during 1 take, but it was hard to hear for certain over traffic. Could this be the 1st time Superman and Lois actually meet? A short while later, they wrapped that scene, and the cast left to do a wardrobe change. A twitter user named @Kriptogaming caught them a few hours later filming in the same area doing a scene where Lois was now wearing a green jacket, and Tyler was now dressed as Clark Kent doing a scene here... https://twitter.com/kriptogaming1/status/1389771005036400640 Superman & Lois season 1 will air Tuesday nights on The CW in the U.S. starting February 23, 2021.
