The 2013 MAY MADNESS winner for favorite TV Show - LEVERAGE (TNT) I have seen lots of "save our show" campaigns over the years. In the new era of instant info coming across our computers, smartphones & TV's, pretty much every show with more than 10 viewers has had 1. Sadly, most dont do well at generating the attention they need. Some, have done it quite well. For the TNT recently canceled crime drama "Leverage" proof of their well constructed efforts is seen everywhere since the cancellation was announced shortly before the series finale aired on Christmas Day. Winner of the 2013 Peoples Choice Award for best Cable drama, finishing 2nd on the TV.Com Best of 2012 vote for "Best Procedural" behind "Castle and now of course, winner of May Madness for "favorite TV show". Going into this tournament, I considered Levarege an "outside favorite". There was a block of shows I considered the probable winners of their divisions. The Walking Dead, Lost Girl, Fringe, The Big Bang Theory. Castle, Supernatural & Once Upon A Time all came in to this event with a history of winning on their side. Each show having won multiple awards on my site, or been in the thick of things repeatedly. I expected my final 2 combatants would come from that small circle. While 3 of the final 4 did come from there, the 1 that wasnt from that group, Leverage, went on to win it all. As for the runner up. Lost Girl 1st came into the attention of my site in 2011 when competition for the "Best Of TV Awards 2011" voting started & their lesbian couple Bo & Lauren were making waves in voting for Best Couple. They would eventually go on to win, giving Lost Girl their 1st, and to date still, only award on the site. Last year, Dr. Lauren Lewis also won favorite character honour in May Madness. Despite continually being in the top 5 in most categories they are in, they always seem to start strong, but finish around the same level of enthusiasm they started with. They have some close calls, Runner up in 2011 for BOTVA Sexiest actress. Runner Up 2012 BOTVA Favorite Character. But the show always seems to come up a bit short, finishing 3rd & 4th in some votes, never yet having won any awards for the show. The "usual suspects" for winning awards, for the mostpart, did well in May Madness. The semi-finals, along with Leverage & Lost Girl, had regular contenders The Big Bang Theory & The Walking Dead also in the mix. Other shows that usually make long runs, Supernatural was knocked out in round 3 by champion Leverage, while in round 2 Once Upon A Time got beat by Supernatural in an early battle of heavyweights. Fringe on the other hand lost in round 3 to eventual runner up, Lost Girl. While Castle met the same fate in round 4. In the category of shows who did better than expected. Rookie action show Arrow made it all the way to the elite 8 group in round 4, as did long since canceled Buffy The Vampire Slayer. On the other hand, suprising early exits could Firefly, Eureka, Burn Notice or Community probably shocked most people. From pure raw votes standpoint, Leverage had 1981 votes over the 6 rounds, amassing their most votes in the final round with 846. Lost Girl had more votes over the tourney with 2247, but managed only their 3rd best round in the finals. Largest margain of victory was 457 by Leverage, over Lost Girl in the finals. Smallest margains of victory was 2, by Twin Peaks over Corner Gas and with Hannibal over Dawsons Creek both in round 1. A total of 12201 votes were cast, the finalists combined, had 34.6% of all the votes cast in the tournament (of course, benefit of the extra round(s) helped) This is the 1st, and depending what format May Madness takes, if it does continue in the future, could be the last honour Leverage might win on my site. As they will not be eligible for any 2013 awards due to the timing of its final episode..... if only it had aired 1 week later. Congratulations to the fans of Leverage for making your show the 2013 May Madness Favorite TV show winner. Congrats to the writers, creators, producers, crew & cast of the show for making a show your fans were so passionate about. I watched the show, I was a fan. It is a shame that TNT failed to see the value in it. Maybe the fans of it can take a page out of a May Madness round 3 competitor this year, Veronica Mars and put the $ together for a movie? The 2013 MAY MADNESS winner for Favorite TV Character - DEAN WINCHESTER (Jensen Ackles) "Supernatural" Whether it is best actor nods, or favorite character nods, the Jensen Ackles acted Supernatural character Dean Winchester seems to win almost all the honours on our site. With the exception of this years defeat for best actor in sci-fi, Ackles/Winchester, has won 2 Best actor, 2 favorite character & even a best director award on our site in the past 3 years. Winning isn't really something this actor/character is a stranger to. Doing it without dominating, without being the top choice throughout, that is something new. The only round Dean Winchester was the top vote getter in was the final round. As far as favorites go, there was no shocks with the finalists. All 4 finalists have won awards or honours on our site. The only mild suprise might have been Daryl Dixon from "The Walking Dead" or Olivia Dunham from "Fringe" not going deeper into the tourney than they did. Runner up, Richard Castle from "Castle" managed a tournament high 806 votes in the semi-finals, but managed only 1/2 that many votes in the finals. Like Dean, Rick Castle actor Nathan Fillion has multiple awards on our site. With 2 Best actor awards for action/drama, he is no stranger to winning either. This year however, they just couldnt sustain the wave of support they generated in the semi-finals. Maybe some of the 806 votes they grabbed in the semis were Dean Winchester fans, voting against the 2012 winner Lauren lewis, who castle was against that round. Unlike the TV show turnament, the character tourney had fewer suprises. Of the final 4, no one ranked lower than 3rd in their bracket going in. While some mild outside contenders made it to the elite 8, 10th ranked Sam Winchester, Deans brother on SPN & their nemesis Crowley, ranked 5th in his bracket, as well as Kenzi from Lost Girl at 11th & Oliver Queen of "Arrow" at 13th gave the Elite 8 a "anything can happen" feel still, but in the end, the veterans of awards & honours on our site pulled through 7 made the final 4 an exclusive club of "winners only". Like with any tournament, there will always be some who did better than expected. The previously mentioned 4 elite 8 finalists for example. In round 1, 13 of the 32 rounds went to the lower ranked competitor. By round 3, there was still 6 of 16 challengers that were in the bottom half of their brackets rankings going in. This of course means, many contenders were made out to be pretenders early on. With a #2 ranked & 2 #3 ranked contenders knocked out in the 1st round, the character tourney was full of upsets. Dean Winchester had 1629 votes in the tournament, 474 of those, their highest total, in the finals. Richard Castle had 1760 votes, but with 806 of those in the semi-final round being their highest total. A total of 13380 votes were cast in all the rounds. Largest margain of victory was in round 1. Dr. Lauren Lewis beating Pacey Witter by 276 votes 298-22. Smallest margainw as also in round 1, 2 votes is all that seperated Fox Mulder from another X-Files character Dana Scully in a 31-29 score. This is the 4th award or honour for Dean Winchester, along with 2 Best actor awards for Jensen Ackles, brings the combo up to 6 total awards/honours for the character/actor. Congratulations to the fans of Dean Winchester for making him the 2013 May Madness Favorite TV Character winner. I am sure in a few months when the nomination process for the 2013 BOTVA awards starts up, Dean/Jensen/SPN will get lots of nominations again. A series of run off polls took place, with results set to give those who had the best results in the 1st round of polls the best chance at a spot in the run off votes, while still giving those who didnt do as well in the 1st round of polls a chance still at a spot in the tournament. 15 shows have more than 1 challenger, with Supernatural having 7 & Once Upon A Time having 4. 23 spots are taken by characters that are on shows which have ended, or are currently in limbo. Soon, 32 of these names will be eliminated. Voting has begun, the first group of 8 match ups in TV Shows, and TV characters are here http://canadagraphs.weebly.com/tv-showdowns---show-vs-show-character-vs-character-battle.html for you to vote on. Below are the results from the voting on the nominees that decided the challengers in this tournament that did not get automatic spots (automatic spots were given to all BOTVA award winners & former May Madness winners) After some decision making time was put in, I have decided that I will have another May Madness...but this one will have some minor revisions.
Instead of a single elimination tournament. It will be double elimination. This thread will be a place to nominate TV SHOWS & TV CHARACTERS that you think deserve to be in it. The contest will be open to ALL TV shows & ALL TV characters of any era ot TV.... although there will only be limited spots available for shows that expired prior to 2012. A decision on HOW MANY spots total will be made sometime in the next couple weeks. Here is a list of AUTOMATICALLY NOMINATED shows & characters (shows & characters automatically nominated are those who have won a BOTVA for show, character or actor. Are a previous May Madness or TV Character league winner.)
