The 2015 Best Of TV Awards are about to start the Finals soon. The 6th annual BOTVA's are still closing out some polls for the run off round before we advance to the finals. We've already shattered the previous record for votes in the first round combined. With over 487,000 votes. The 2015 BOTVA's all time record of 575,000 votes in a year looks sure to fall as we passed the 560,000 vote mark in the semi-finals & nearly broke the 570,000 mark. Only finalists last year to miss the mark this year were two of my faves, Molly Quinn & Jennifer Love Hewitt. Despite the finalists list expanding from 16 to 20. Newcomers to the finals this year will include Amy Acker, Sarah Shahi, Gillian Anderson, Hayley Atwell, Elizabeth Henstridge, Grace Park. The last 3 winners, Emily Bett Rickards, Jennifer Lawrence and Stana Katic are all in this years finals. Along with 4 time top 3 finalist Zoie Palmer. In a rare occurance in these awards, pretty much all the leaders in the nomination round were near the top in the semi-finals. The top 4 in this round, Rickards, Acker, Shahi, Palmer, were also the top 4 in the opening round. As well, Anderson, Silk and Parrilla in the opening round all finished in the top 8 & did so here as well. This is nothing short of rare for these awards, as the opening round often sees 1 or 2 hopefuls being propped up by a couple enthusiastic supporters fall by the wayside in round 2 when the voting is limited to 1 each. Last years winner Emily Bett Rickards had sizable leads in the 1st & 2nd rounds & would seem like a good bet to repeat this year. The Sexiest Actor Category was not so predictable. While last years winner Stephen Amell did lead the semi-final voting, he was an adequate 8th in the opening round. The Nomination round vote leader Mads Mikkelsen continued with trying to make an impact by coming in 2nd in the semi-finals. His co-star, who finished 2nd in round 1, didnt even qualify for the finals. Strange to say the least, its usually not till the finals that fandoms abandon a 2nd choice when voting is streamlined to only 1 or 2 picks. Another top 5 opening round vote getter didnt make the finals, Vincent D'Onofrio, as the power of the small handful of voters he had in the first round couldnt get enough of their fans to follow suit in round 2. Jim Caviezel, Jared Padalecki & Chris Hemsworth round out the top 5 in the semi-finals. Only Caviezel was a top 5 name after round one of voting. Three time winner Jensen Ackles qualified for the finals in 7th, the lowest hes ever come into the finals at. The Best Non-Human Character or Prop category looks poised to potentially have a new winner. The four time winner, The Impala from "Supernatural" seems to have some stiff competition this year. The "Person Of Interest" dog Bear has led the voting in both rounds, with another POI candidate second in both, The Machine. While The Impala did improve from the 1st round to the 2nd round by going from a 5th place showing up to a 3rd place showing & was less than 100 votes behind the leader, this is clearly the first ever sign of any challenge to the defending 4X champions crown. Interestingly the 3rd place finisher in round 1, did not even make the finals, finishing 2nd to last. While the last place qualifier in round 1 finished in the top 5 this round. The Final round of the 2015 Best Of TV Awards will be under way with some categories soon. Each voting round will last 3 to 6 days.. The Winner of the 2014 Best Of TV Award for Best Non-Human Character or Prop is.... The Impala "Supernatural" A rare feat in the awards now is to be the only winner of an award. The Impala from "Supernatural" has managed to do just that for 4 consecutive years now. Winning this category with 1087 votes, it wasnt a sure thing for the champion. The Flash Suit from "The Flash" made it closer than the car known by its fans as"Baby" is used to, with 893, almost 300 of those votes were in the last 48 hrs... if it had started its rally maybe a day earlier...who knows. In 3rd was The TARDIS from "Doctor Who" which for a couple days, was actually leading the vote, and was also the semi-final vote leader, it ended with 752 votes. In 4th was last years runner up Rumplestiltskin's Dagger "Once Upon A Time" finishing with 466 votes. The dog known as Bear on "Person of Interest" finished 5th with 308. Daryl's Crossbow "The Walking Dead" was 6th with 253, and Michonne's Katana also from "The Walking Dead" was 7th with 205. In fact, Bear from Person of Interest is the ONLY other semi-finalist from last year to even make it this year. On the talk show host side. Nothing much changes. Ellen Degeneres again looks poised for a 3rd consecutive title as she handily won the semi-finals, as she has in the previous years. All of last years finalists made this years finals as well. Also making it are newcomer John Oliver, and retiring legend David Letterman, who did not even make the semi-finals last year. A 3rd consecutive win for the "Supernatural" Impala really never seemed in doubt, as the Winchesters "baby" took the lead early & never let go, finishing with 1145 votes. "Once Upon A Time" nabbed 2nd & 3rd & may have suffered from some vote splitting. Rumplestiltskins Dagger was 2nd with 818 votes, while The Jolly Roger was 3rd with 492 votes. Rounding out the finalists was The Blueberry "Psych" a finalist last year, in 4th & Men Of Letters Bunker "Supernatural" in 5th. The Impala set a category record with 1145 votes, breaking its own previous record in 2011 of 864. A record low 3 programs had finalists in the category - this ties the record, previously set in 2012 in 4 categories Best sci-fi or fantasy actor, Best Sci-Fi or Fantasy Actress, Best Guest Star & Best Recurring Actor. The "Supernatural" Impala with 2 consecutive titles crushed its semi-final competition with 682 votes, more than double its closes challenger, the "Supernatural" Men Of Letters Bunker at 292 votes. Rounding out the top 3 is Rumplestiltskins Dagger from "Once Upon A Time" only 20 votes back at 272. Another OUAT object was 4th, as Captain Hooks ship, The Jolly Roger snagged 4th, ahead of compact business car The Blueberry from "Psych". Missing the finals this year by 25 votes was the "Community" monkey Annies Boobs, a finalist the 2 years prior. The Machine (a finalist last year) & Bear from "Person Of Interest" were right behind. Well back in last was The Pale Horse from "Hell On Wheels" The Best Talk Show Host category is in its 2nd year, but it doesnt look like much has changed from the 1st one last year. Ellen Degeneres again is crushing the challengers in both rounds, with 580 votes this round. Way back in 2nd with 210 votes is Jimmy Fallon (didnt even make the finals last year). In 3rd is Stephen Colbert at 152 votes. Conan O'Brien, Jon Stewart & Jimmy Kimmel round out the finalists this year. Missing the finals - Chelsea Handler & James Lipton, neither of whom were really very close to the lead pack. The finals will start January 5 , 2014 For the 3rd year running, the Best Non-Human Character Or Prop category looks like it will belong to The 1967 Impala from "Supernatural". With 1039 votes, The Impala had more than the next 3 combined. 2nd was another "Supernatural" item, the Men Of Letters Bunker. 3rd was "Once Upon A Time" item, Rumplestiltskins Dagger. Rounding out the semi-finalists The Blueberry from "Psych", The Pale Horse "Hell On Wheels", Bear "Person Of Interest", The Machine "Person Of Interest", Annies Boobs "Community" & The Jolly Roger "Once Upon A Time". Last 2 years runner up Gene from "Fringe" managed no votes, perhaps the 2 seconds of screen time this year made the fans forget? For the 2nd year in a row, the Best Director category is being lead by a "Supernatural" director. This time however, its not the 1 of the shows lead actors. Philip Sgriccia (Sacrifice) from "Supernatural" was the leader in round 1 with 733 votes. Shawn Piller (Fallour) from "Haven" snagged 2nd spot ahead of 3 more SPN choices. The Best Couple category looks like it will be a two horse race this year. Dr Lauren Lewis & Bo "Lost Girl" lead 1st round voting with 15,349 votes. Second was Damon Salvatore & Elena Gilbert "The Vampire Diaries" with 13,387 votes. After Lauren & Bo, the 2011 winners, lost last year to Richard Castle & Kate Beckett from "Castle" (4th in the 1st round this year) it looks like they are serious about trying to regain their title. The other member of the top 4 was 3rd place from "Once Upon A Time" Mr Gold & Belle. In the Recurring Actor category. It again looks like another year of Supernatural domination. After winning last year with Jim Beaver & the year before with Mark Sheppard in this category under its old title of "Supporting Actor", Supernatural again goes into round 2 with the vote leader. Osric Chau had 1833 votes, only 43 ahead of runner up Christopher Heyerdahl "Hell On Wheels" however. Well back in 3rd "Orphan Black" actor David Richmond-Peck After a strong write in campaign to get him on the ballot, "Once Upon A Time In Wonderland" actor Peter Gadiot snagged 4th, Michael Cerveris from "Fringe" rounded out the top 5. Other semi-finalists include john Noble, Joshua Jackson & Michael Kopsa "Fringe", Raphael Sbarge "Once Upon A Time", Nikolaj Coster-Waldau & Richard Madden "Game Of Thrones", Wayne Brady "How I Met Your Mother", Michael Socha "Once Upon A Time In Wonderland", Mark Pellegrino & Robbie Amell "The Tomorrow People" , John Pyper-Ferguson "Burn Notice", Adam Copeland "Haven", James Marsters "Warehouse 13", Sage Brocklebank "Psych", Enrico Colantoni "Person Of Interest", Ian Tracey & Hugh Dillon "Continuum", Ben Cotton, Ryan Robbins "The Killing" & Matt Frewer "Orphan Black" On the Actress side the winners of both titles "Supernatural" with Rachel Miner & Julia Maxwell, do have some top 6 contenders, but if the 1st round of voting is any indication, it looks like we might have some other show on top this year. Gillian Anderson "Hannibal" had 2431 votes in round 1, more than the rest of the top 10 list. The 2010 Best Actress winner Anna Torv "Fringe" was 2nd in the recurring category since her show didnt air enough episodes in 2013 for her to be in the main category. Crystal Lowe "Primeval New World" snagged 3rd. There was a trio of "Supernatural" girls from 4th thru 6th. Felicia Day (a Guest Star finalist last year), Alaina Huffman & Amanda Tapping (2011 Sci-Fi actress finalist on Sanctuary) took those spots. Rounding out the semi-finalists Emma Lahana "Haven", Caity Lotz, Summer Glau & Bex Taylor-Klaus "Arrow", Lisa Edelstein "Castle", Jamie Chung & Sarah Bolger "Once Upon A Time", Sara Canning "Primeval New World", Natalie Dormer "Elementary", Yvonne Strahovski "Dexter", Jessy Schram "Falling Skies", Cristin Milioti "How I Met Your Mother", Magda Apanowicz "Continuum", Jane Fonda "The Newsroom" Round 2 voting will begin December 1, 2013 on some categories. |
