The Flash cast & crew filmed this past Thursday, into early Friday morning at Science World, in the far north east part of downtown Vancouver. This is for the season 9 finale, the series finale, and the Arrowverse finale. It is directed by Vanessa Parise. This is the same location that they used for the season 7 finale where Godspeed, Reverse Flash, and The Flash had that famous lightning light saber battle. This time, a few more people would be on the set. Early in the day, I got there while they were still setting up. It was going to be cold that night, and I was hoping to get some photos of them rehearsing before it got too cold. Unfortunately, they didnt start rehearsing till it was plenty dark, and already cold. They started with some stunts, featuring the stunt double for Cobalt Blue out on the set. He went up to a car, and shoved it aggressively, which I assume set off the chain reaction that some may have seen in the explosion scene in this video on tiktok. I missed it, as I was across the street in a buddies car getting warm, but we could see it easily enough from the car, as the fireballs were all several feet high, clearing all the equipment that was between us & the set. After they did that explosion scene, there was a scene where someone went through a glass sign (the one I photographed in the daytime), then after cleaning up all that, they started shooting with cast. It was already late & cold by then, and I was only saved by bringing hand warmers with me, and a couple times sitting in a car. Without those, I would have left several hours earlier. On set for this massive scene was several actors, and a couple stunt doubles. First off, people you might have expected to be around. Jessica Parker Kennedy as XS, Kayla Compton as Allegra Garcia, Danielle Nicolet as Cecile Horton, Jon Cor as Chillblaine, aaaaand Danielle Panabaker as Khione. But they were not the only cast out there, there was a roster of speedster villains against them. Rick Cosnett was out there as Cobalt Blue, Teddy Sears was there as Zoom, and a bit of an unexpected shock was Tom Cavanagh back as Reverse Flash, as he had not been announced as being back, unlike the other two. With them were stunt doubles filling the suits of Savitar, and Godspeed. Also on set was Cody Laudan as The Flash. Oddly, Grant Gustin did not work all night (this is quite odd.. only other time I have seen that was one time when Grant got snowed in back east, and 1 other time on another show when an actor got too sick to work on short notice). The scenes did not seem to have a lot in the way of action going on. It essentially had the 5 villains in a row, facing the 6 Team Flash members all standing in a row. It gave us a bit better look at Ceciles costume, which the first set I shot her at, didnt give me the impression the suit was blue, but now I could clearly see it is. Allegra might have had a suit as well, but couldnt be so certain. Khiones wardrobe was seemingly a more toned down old Frost costume, with a more modest look to it. Also, whether you like him or not, you have to give your full respect to Jon Cor as Chillblaine, he was out there SHIRTLESS with his jacket wide open, in below freezing conditions (the temperatures ranged from -1C to -7C on the night) for the scenes. For the most part, the villains team seemed to have Cobalt Blue doing the majority of the dialogue, but it really was hard to be sure, as I was shooting all of it from about a football field away. On Team Flash, I never really got the impression anyone specific was controlling the dialogue there, but again, they had their backs to me for the entire scene. During 1 break, we got to talk to Teddy Sears for a few minutes, while he signed autographs He said he was excited to be back, and thanked all the fans who campaigned for him to return, because he really wanted to come back, and kept checking in with them himself to see if they wanted him to come back, and only got the word about 2 weeks out from filming. I also chatted very briefly with Tom Cavanagh, and finally met Kayla Compton for the 1st time. This MIGHT be the last location shoot the show ever has downtown. They did have another one the very next night, in a city 30 minutes away, that seemed to just be a lot of Godspeeds doing a stunt scene. As of right now, there are no more sets known yet. They only have a week of filming left to do, as they wrap on March 6, 2023. The episode, the penultimate episode of the series, is directed by Stefan Pleszczynski. On this night they filmed 3 different locations in the area. First was across the street at the top of a parking garage. Obviously there was nothing up there that could be seen. I know Grant Gustin was up there as The Flash. I was also told by a crew member that Jessica Parker Kennedy was up there. After that, they moved across the street to film the first location shoot of the night. There were some "future" looking signs like for VR med help, and an automated CC Jitters, implying its in the future. In the scene was Grant & Jessica again as The Flash & XS. In the scene, they had XS trying to make people leave the area for some reason. A few moments later, Flash comes in, looks around, and then runs off with XS. A pretty anti-climactic scene over all. A bit later, they moved down to the a street that is used a lot. On this night, they had it dressed up to look like Porter Plaza, a location they have been to before here. Grant & Jessica were down there as well as Flash & XS, but they were joined by 1 other cast member, Danielle Nicolet was down there. I assume as Cecile Horton, but..... something was different. The "muscle" of Team Flash was there in what seemed like a head to toe leather outfit.... and a mask. Yep, Ceciles wardrobe has.... levelled up. Earlier in the evening they did a stunt with Grants double, Cody falling from a high height onto a pile of mats. A bit later, Grant took over from the stunt doubles spot, in the classic default starting position of The Flash, laying on the ground. A scene with XS coming in and seemingly throwing something in the direction of where Flash would have been was a bit hard to see, I was too far away, with too much equipment in the way to see if it was at him, or past him. After that, a scene with Cecile coming in, and walking up to Flash on the ground, putting out her hand, and lifting the scarlet speedster off the ground. After that, I called it a night, even though they had a bit more time left to film. It was cold, and long day, so I decided to call it there. Funny enough, I didnt even know about the Cecile mask till I got home and looked at the photos a bit. I was so unsure at what I saw, I lightened the photo to make sure I saw what I saw. Thats why the 1 photo looks so light. A place they have filmed multiple times this season, including just a few weeks earlier for this set. On this day, they were doing a night shoot, with The Flash star Kayla Compton directing. I showed up far too earlier, but that did give me the chance to look around, and get an idea of what might be filmed that night. Early on I noticed right away they had a bunch of grave markers set up. I hastily shot as many as I could, hoping to get some cool sneak peak spoiler, but alas, none of the ones I shot in the park had any spoilery names on them. BUT, they did tell a different part of the story, this scene was going to be set in the future, as there were grave markers spanning several decades, all the way into the 2040s. If you dont know, TV set "grave markers" are made from styrofoam, which is of course light, and easy to carry. Unfortunately, this also makes them easy to knock over by any wind. On this day, we were under a severe wind advisory, as possible gusts of up to 90 KM/H were expected, and sure enough, the wind played havoc on the set. The wind knocked over a about 20% of their markers. They had small pegs in the ground to hold them in place, but they were no contest for the intense winds, so they started having to use larger sticks on the back, propping the markers up, to give it more support. Unfortunately, I was TOO early, and had to kill a lot of time before the equipment trucks even started rolling in. When they finally did, I paid attention to all the cast trailers that came in as close as I could. I didnt know it yet, but this was going to be mostly wasted time. I saw the 1st trailers for cast members come in with the name "Allegra" & "Allegra stunts" on it, and then shortly after a trailer for "director" (and a name I didnt catch), which happens to also be the actress playing Allegra, so that was kinda odd to me. Things only got weirder, next ones said "Taylor" & "Aartz" on them, which are members of the Central City Citizen. The last trailer to come in had 2 names I wasnt expecting "Malcolm" & "Speed Force Nora". Shortly after the trailers came in, I walked around, and thats when I saw the uncovered tombstone of "Edward Thawne" on a small platform they had built in the parking lot that looked similar to the graveyard in the park, but more tighter for close up scenes. I then went back to the set in the park to see if I saw the same thing there. Unfortunately, that one was still covered. I then was hanging around near the parking lot again, killing time. While I was hanging around, I noticed 1 crew member changing out the name tags on the trailers. The two CCC members names were switched out for "Producer" and "writer", which of course was not helpful for me. A few minutes later, he would return, and this time he changed out Malcolm and Speed Force Nora names to "Eddie" & "Korber" (the officer who gets like 1 line every 5 to 7 eps). All I can assume is the names on the trailers when they came in were from earlier in the day scenes at the studio, or yesterdays scenes at the studio. It is very common for trailers that dont house the main cast, to change out daily, I had just never seen it happen in real time, shortly before cast were about to show up. About half an hour later, I saw Rick Cosnett show up. He went into his trailer, and headed off to hair & make up. While he was gone doing that, someone showed up that headed into Korbers trailer (I didnt see if it was Stephanie Izsak for certain or not, but it was a woman, and they didnt immediately come back out, so I assume it was). Almost an hour later, Rick returned to his trailer from h&m, went inside for about 5 mins, before an AD knocked on his door to tell him they were ready for him and he came back out in Eddie attire & headed to the set that you see the photos from below. The scene they shot while I was there was pretty hard to get all the details, because of how far away I had to be from the scene (even though its a public park, during filming, they do have this large area kinda cordoned off for them.). For rehearsals, I wasnt TOO far away, but there was so much crew there with their umbrellas all open (it was pouring rain at the time), I couldnt see much. What was absolutely clear, was Rick Cosnett was at a grave, digging it up in a furiously fast manner. After rehearsals, I moved to try and find a view not blocked by a sea of umbrellas, and thats where I got the shots from that little nook way off in the distance that I posted the photo of, to show you how far away it was. At one point, the camera pans upward to look from up high, directly down into the grave, where Rick would still be. What does he find in there? I dont know. There was no loud sounds, or items he dragged out of it. Just him digging into it. The weather was cold, it had rained on & off all evening, and was now dark out, and the park is full of coyotes (as you can see from the 1 photo I posted below from earlier in the day. I saw at least 3 different ones while I was there). So I did something really rare for me, I quit this set at like 7 PM, even though I knew they would still be filming for another 6+ hours. But what I got while I was there, definitely has some theory video makers minds working overtime. There will be some video from scenes from this episode to post in the next few weeks, so come back to find those then, or you can subscribe to my Youtube channel and get them there when they drop. On Feb 14, 2023, the cast & crew returned to the park to do another night of shooting the scene. Unfortunately, they were unable to finish their work at the previous set because of the weather, so they were back. This time I managed to get a couple new details I didnt get the last time. First, I got a photo of the Eddie grave in the park, and not the one that was in the parking lots secondary scene, confirming these were in fact the same sets. From a filming aspect, the two details of note were, seeing Officer Korber pulling something that looks like a taser on Eddie, she then walks towards him & they have a talk. I picked up 1 other notable thing from this set, a very loud piece of audio from Eddie in the scene, where after Korber comes up to him, he exclaims in a loud shout "I AM EDDIE. I AM ALIVE. AND I NEED TO KNOW WHY". That was all I saw them film while I was there. But it adds more context to the scene that was not seen at the last set, so it warranted a rare update to one of my blog posts. The Flash cast & crew filmed scenes on Monday & Tuesday in downtown Vancouver in an area they have been using quite frequently in the last couple years. Monday started with them filming inside the CBC Studio, which is a large TV & radio studio for Canada's National TV station, right in downtown Vancouver. This is the episode being directed by the show runner, Eric Wallace. I learned a couple of details on this day beyond what I physically saw, I will get on to that later. The days exterior scene had two returning characters on set filming. Jesse L. Martin as Joe West, was filming with Patrick Sabongui as David Singh. The setting seemed to be set in the past, maybe the 1980s, or 90s? Ads in the area including one for an older model computer, as well as ads for CC Jitters, and Big Belly Burger. As well, there was some older style cop cars there, with some older model civilian cars. On top of that, Joe was wearing a Police officer jacket, and Singhs hair looked different than it does these days. The scene had them investigating a crime scene in the middle of the street, with Singh walking up to Joe, saying a couple things, and then walking away to talk to other officers. Then Joe walks over & grabs something that was being described as a "crystal" off the ground (looks similar to the one we see at the end of season 8), puts it in his pocket, then Singh comes over to him & talks to him again, with Joe storming off, as Singh looks back at him suspiciously. I never got a photo of Joe with the crystal, so I had to take a screen cap from my videos to show you what it looked like in the photos below. Despite it being in plain view in this pic, in the majority of takes, he puts it in his pocket before Singh comes over (this might have been just a rehearsal take). Some of the photos I took over these two days, might look grainy/fuzzy, that is because I was shooting through a window in the library, as street angles were not always good. So if you see one that seems a little fuzzier, that might be why. This was essentially all they filmed for the time I was there. I had planned on coming back for the evening shoot, but got there too late. The film notice said they were supposed to be there till 9, and I got there just after 7 to find they had just wrapped shortly before I got there. When I got a chance to look at my photos from that day, I was more upset I missed it, as I found a piece of info in my photos that if I had seen it in real time, I wouldnt have left the set. On Tuesday, they were back in the same block. This time, two completely different returning guest stars were on the set, along with Grant Gustin as Barry Allen. John Wesley Shipp was on set as Henry Allen, with Michelle Harrison as Nora Allen. The trio did a scene that had Henry & Nora walking together up the street. They then stopped at a CC Jitters kiosk, and grabbed a drink. They then were talking, when all of a sudden Barry is thrust into the area, falling into the middle of the street. The first while when I saw this scene being shot, I thought Barry got hit by a car, but after seeing more of it, from other angles, I now realize he got thrust TOWARDS the car, which stops just in front of him, after Henry runs out into the street & bangs on the hood of the car as it stops. Henry & Nora then run over to an onconscious Barry, and Nora gets on an old style flip phone, while Henry checks Barrys vitals. After a while, Grant & John left set, and they brought in the stunt doubles for them, while Michelle stayed to do the dialogue part of her characters scene, while Grants double gets thrown across the concrete, and Johns double runs out in front of the car. After that, they wrapped up that location & moved across the street. UNFORTUNATELY, like the first day, I misused my time, but in a different way this time. They moved across the street to shoot a scene at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, which they renamed the Central City Theater for the scene. I know nothing of what happened in the scene, because I really thought I had more time, and was doing a live chat while they were filming, and when I was done with that, unfortunately was just after they had wrapped. I assumed they were going to come back, but they did not. All I know about the scene is Grant was there again, dressed as Barry. There are two details I picked up while I was there on the first day by dumb luck. One is, a guest star that ALSO filmed on the Monday set, but unfortunately not while I was there, that is Rick Cosnett was working that day. I DO NOT KNOW the character he was playing, so dont get carried away with speculations. The other, is the episode title, which I found curious. "A New World: Part One". The Flash cast & crew filmed scenes on Thursday & Friday nights, which went well into Friday & Saturday mornings in downtown Vancouver this week. On top of that, I also caught them out at Central Park in Burnaby back on Tuesday for a scene there, that I did not see, but saw who was on set. The outdoor scene in the middle of the forest in Central Park had 2 actors on set, along with director Danielle Panabaker. Those actors being Grant Gustin as Barry Allen, and the return of Arrow star Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen. The photos below are of them in their wardrobe for the scene, and not their personal wear. When the cast & crew got to downtown Vancouver 2 nights later, they were met by substantially more onlookers, and substantially more rain. This was 1 of the wettest sets I have been to in a long time. The set, at the Vancouver Art Gallery, was surrounded by fencing (a thing them, and them only have done the past couple times they have filmed at this location). On set for this, along with Danielle as director, were Grant as The Flash, Stephen as The Green Arrow, along with the other 3 announced returning guest stars for this episode, Keiynan Lonsdale as Wally West /Kid Flash, David Ramsey as John Diggle/Spartan, and Sendhil Ramamurthy as Ramsey Rosso/ Bloodwork. I got there early enough to see rehearsals done, and in 1 scene saw Diggle holding a bazooka. But I never saw him USE it in any of the scenes I saw shot (he may have, and it was out of view of the parts I could see.) The scenes on the Thursday night shoot had all 5 of them on set at different periods, in different combinations. I am unsure if all 5 were in 1 scene together, as the way scenes are shot, doesnt always tell that in person. But the way it played out, I BELIEVE this is all part of the same scene. At one point, a scene with Spartan & Green Arrow had Spartan speed walk up to GA & hug him, as if this was the 1st time they had seen each other since Crisis. Immediately after that, the pair would go off screen, and Kid Flash & Flash would come in, do a scene where the pair were seemingly pulling on some type of rope, or other item that can be pulled. Barry then yells out to Oliver that he has a clear shot now. A bit later, there was a scene with Arrow, Flash & Kid Flash standing together in a line (unclear if Diggle was also there, due to equipment impeding parts of the scene). It is unclear what the scene entailed, as they eventually all moved out of my view shortly after. Another scene on the night that was done, is 1 everybody is probably waiting for. The Green Arrow perched on top of a truck, yells out with quite some force "Ramsey Rosso, You Have Failed This City" as he aims his bow, and shoots in to the distance. Later on, they had Stephen and David out on set doing a scene, in it they had Sendhil raised a few feet into the air as Ramsey Rosso. I dont know the full context of it. Thats just what I know was happening. At one point, late in the night, David, Grant, Danielle, and Stephen posed together for a photo (unsure whose phone it was on, but I am sure 1 of them will post it on social media in the not too distant future). I missed that shot, but another photgrapher that was there, was generous enough to lend me 1 of his frames of it. Late in the eevening, myself, and a couple other fans managed to get Keiynan to stop & sign some autographs, and take a photo. It was raining harder then than maybe any other point in the evening. Fortunately, my umbrella did its job & kept them dry. Not long after that, I called it a night, and went home to recoup for the next day. On the 2nd night, they returned to the same location to film more scenes. On this night, I saw far less than the night before. Partially because of where they shot in the courtyard, and partially because of fans the night before ruining the best spot. I had crew tell me on multiple occasions throughout the night, that the reason that 1 of the streets was all blocked off with scrims (the large black tarps they use primarily for lighting, but sometimes privacy) was to stop fans from congrgating there, as the night before they were a constant nuisance to the people working in the tents that were right beside there with all their chatter.
So that misfortune, combined with my physical exhaustion & soreness from the night before, saw me far less motivated on night two. I spent a good chunk of it doing a Live Chat where fans got to see me wish Grant a Happy Birthday in real time near the end of the stream, and socializing with others that came out to the set. Before they started filming, Grant stopped to sign some autographs for myself, and one of the other regulars. He then stopped again later to do photos with people when he wrapped. The early part of the night had Grant, Keiynan, Sendhil, and Stephen on set (I actually never saw David all night, even though his trailer appeared to be in use). For the mostpart, I wasnt able to see a lot, just that most of the action seemed to take place around a towncar. At one point they did a scene with The Flash & Green Arrow seemingly getting up from the ground, but that was really all I could see of the scenes before their lunch break. After lunch, the only scene I saw shot was a stunt scene I had seen breifly being practiced 2 days before, with a bunch of men in SWAT gear attacking the Green Arrow, and he kicking their asses. I called this second night a bit earlier than the first night due to how sore I was after that 1st night, and the fact there seemed to be very little cast left. If you are confused on how many you can post, ASK FIRST, and I will let you know. The Flash cast & crew filmed scenes on Wednesday & Thursday nights, which went well into Thursday & Friday mornings in downtown Vancouver this week. In my previous blog that you can find HERE we had Grant Gustin as The Flash, as well as Javicia Leslie as Red Death, along with a stunt woman playing Batwoman, as well as a stunt double for Red Death also being in the scenes. This time, Grant, and Javicia were back again, but this time Javicia was in her Batwoman attire, while Red Death was being played exclusively by a stunt double. But they were also joined by 3 sort of unexpected returning characters. Andy Mientus (who was there working during his birthday, and the crew & cast sang him Happy Birthday when he wrapped, and gave him a little cake) was back as Hartley Rathaway / Pied Piper, he was joined by 2 of the most polarizing characters in the history of the show that fans either love unconditionally, or loathe, for the same reasons. Max Adler was back as Jaco Birch / The Hotness, and Damion Poitier was back as Keith / Goldface. Like the night before, scenes had Batwoman teaming up with The Flash in an effort to stop Red Death. This time, they were teaming up with the three unexpected former villains, turned anti-heroes. The early part of the night I didnt see a lot of what was going on because of the angles available, As the night went on, the 1st scene I got a really good look at seemed to just have the 5 characters standing around together, looking to be having a chat. Whether this is before, or after the big battle, was not known. The actors between takes were having a good time, and all seemed to be having some laughs on set. I then found another angle which only showed me the 3 returning characters standing together for that scene, as The Flash & Batwoman were blocked out by equipment. A bit later, after Grant and Javicia had wrapped for the night, they did more scenes with the trio of anti-heroes doing a scene with Red Death. It was VERY HARD to see any of it again because of the angles available, but I did get a little peek thru part of 1 of the burned out cars in the scene to see The Hotness and Pied Piper using their skills to try & combat something (presumably Red Death since I didnt see another character there), and then were thrown backwards, with Goldface by this same thing. After the trio wrapped. They did scenes with the stunt double for Red Death, and Batwoman, doing a fighting scene, where they traded blows through the wreckage of the burned out cars. That was the last I saw of the set. It was cold, and late, so even though they still had a couple more hours of filming left, I called it a night. Based off what I saw that night, along with a recent social media post form Javicia herself. It seems this arc ends in episode 5. Great to see her back 1 last time before the Arrowverse bids a farewell. Before she wrapped that night, she stopped and took some photos with fans, and signed some stuff, including for 1 fan, a Red Death Funko, which she said something that i didnt know if it was a question, or a statement of face, but was something like "I'm the first person to play a live action Red Death". I didnt hear her whole quote, just that part, so I dont know if she was asking the person she was signing it for if they knew, or if she was saying it as a fact. But it was cool to see someone from the Arrowverse acknowledge it in some capacity that its the character everyone knew it was, despite WBDs PR departments incompetent attempt to mislead. The Flash cast & crew filmed scenes on Wednesday & Thursday nights, which went well into Thursday & Friday mornings in downtown Vancouver this week. On set on this night was Grant Gustin as The Flash, as well as Javicia Leslie as Red Death. But another character was also on the set with them...... Batwoman. In total, there was 5 or 6 people working in the scenes at different points. But only 2 actors with dialogue. The rest were the stunts team for these characters. Javicia did the scenes where her voice was needed, and twice she had lines I could hear. Once was something about The Flash ruining her plans. The other time was "Aaaaaggggghhhhh", before Batwoman KOs her. The scene at times seems a bit confusing for me to follow just watching it, but afterwards when I was able to watch my video clips in playback, I got a bit more of an idea whats going on. The cliff notes version is there was a fight between Red Death, and a team that consisted of Batwoman, The Flash, and other characters mentioned in THIS BLOG HERE. At one point, they blew up a car, and I missed that by less than 20 seconds. I went for lunch while they were setting that up, thinking I'd have like an hour+, as any time there is scenes with explosions they do several safety checks before it happens. I came back from my meal, and funny enough got stopped by the crew who said they were about to film a scene and cant have anyone on the road for safety. So I decided to go down an alley to get to the other end to see it, because I was pretty sure it was going to be for that explosion.... and half way down the back alley, I heard it go off. D'oh! But throughout this shoot, they had multiple cars on fire for some of the fights, so it definitely was heavy on the pyrotechnics. The 1st photo was of a board outside the venue across the street from where they were filming, showing how cold it was that night. I was out in that for about 7-7.5 hours that night, so hope you enjoy these photos.
