The Flash cast & crew filmed scenes on Monday & Tuesday in downtown Vancouver in an area they have been using quite frequently in the last couple years. Monday started with them filming inside the CBC Studio, which is a large TV & radio studio for Canada's National TV station, right in downtown Vancouver. This is the episode being directed by the show runner, Eric Wallace. I learned a couple of details on this day beyond what I physically saw, I will get on to that later. The days exterior scene had two returning characters on set filming. Jesse L. Martin as Joe West, was filming with Patrick Sabongui as David Singh. The setting seemed to be set in the past, maybe the 1980s, or 90s? Ads in the area including one for an older model computer, as well as ads for CC Jitters, and Big Belly Burger. As well, there was some older style cop cars there, with some older model civilian cars. On top of that, Joe was wearing a Police officer jacket, and Singhs hair looked different than it does these days. The scene had them investigating a crime scene in the middle of the street, with Singh walking up to Joe, saying a couple things, and then walking away to talk to other officers. Then Joe walks over & grabs something that was being described as a "crystal" off the ground (looks similar to the one we see at the end of season 8), puts it in his pocket, then Singh comes over to him & talks to him again, with Joe storming off, as Singh looks back at him suspiciously. I never got a photo of Joe with the crystal, so I had to take a screen cap from my videos to show you what it looked like in the photos below. Despite it being in plain view in this pic, in the majority of takes, he puts it in his pocket before Singh comes over (this might have been just a rehearsal take). Some of the photos I took over these two days, might look grainy/fuzzy, that is because I was shooting through a window in the library, as street angles were not always good. So if you see one that seems a little fuzzier, that might be why. This was essentially all they filmed for the time I was there. I had planned on coming back for the evening shoot, but got there too late. The film notice said they were supposed to be there till 9, and I got there just after 7 to find they had just wrapped shortly before I got there. When I got a chance to look at my photos from that day, I was more upset I missed it, as I found a piece of info in my photos that if I had seen it in real time, I wouldnt have left the set. On Tuesday, they were back in the same block. This time, two completely different returning guest stars were on the set, along with Grant Gustin as Barry Allen. John Wesley Shipp was on set as Henry Allen, with Michelle Harrison as Nora Allen. The trio did a scene that had Henry & Nora walking together up the street. They then stopped at a CC Jitters kiosk, and grabbed a drink. They then were talking, when all of a sudden Barry is thrust into the area, falling into the middle of the street. The first while when I saw this scene being shot, I thought Barry got hit by a car, but after seeing more of it, from other angles, I now realize he got thrust TOWARDS the car, which stops just in front of him, after Henry runs out into the street & bangs on the hood of the car as it stops. Henry & Nora then run over to an onconscious Barry, and Nora gets on an old style flip phone, while Henry checks Barrys vitals. After a while, Grant & John left set, and they brought in the stunt doubles for them, while Michelle stayed to do the dialogue part of her characters scene, while Grants double gets thrown across the concrete, and Johns double runs out in front of the car. After that, they wrapped up that location & moved across the street. UNFORTUNATELY, like the first day, I misused my time, but in a different way this time. They moved across the street to shoot a scene at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, which they renamed the Central City Theater for the scene. I know nothing of what happened in the scene, because I really thought I had more time, and was doing a live chat while they were filming, and when I was done with that, unfortunately was just after they had wrapped. I assumed they were going to come back, but they did not. All I know about the scene is Grant was there again, dressed as Barry. There are two details I picked up while I was there on the first day by dumb luck. One is, a guest star that ALSO filmed on the Monday set, but unfortunately not while I was there, that is Rick Cosnett was working that day. I DO NOT KNOW the character he was playing, so dont get carried away with speculations. The other, is the episode title, which I found curious. "A New World: Part One". The Flash cast & crew filmed scenes on Thursday & Friday nights, which went well into Friday & Saturday mornings in downtown Vancouver this week. On top of that, I also caught them out at Central Park in Burnaby back on Tuesday for a scene there, that I did not see, but saw who was on set. The outdoor scene in the middle of the forest in Central Park had 2 actors on set, along with director Danielle Panabaker. Those actors being Grant Gustin as Barry Allen, and the return of Arrow star Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen. The photos below are of them in their wardrobe for the scene, and not their personal wear. When the cast & crew got to downtown Vancouver 2 nights later, they were met by substantially more onlookers, and substantially more rain. This was 1 of the wettest sets I have been to in a long time. The set, at the Vancouver Art Gallery, was surrounded by fencing (a thing them, and them only have done the past couple times they have filmed at this location). On set for this, along with Danielle as director, were Grant as The Flash, Stephen as The Green Arrow, along with the other 3 announced returning guest stars for this episode, Keiynan Lonsdale as Wally West /Kid Flash, David Ramsey as John Diggle/Spartan, and Sendhil Ramamurthy as Ramsey Rosso/ Bloodwork. I got there early enough to see rehearsals done, and in 1 scene saw Diggle holding a bazooka. But I never saw him USE it in any of the scenes I saw shot (he may have, and it was out of view of the parts I could see.) The scenes on the Thursday night shoot had all 5 of them on set at different periods, in different combinations. I am unsure if all 5 were in 1 scene together, as the way scenes are shot, doesnt always tell that in person. But the way it played out, I BELIEVE this is all part of the same scene. At one point, a scene with Spartan & Green Arrow had Spartan speed walk up to GA & hug him, as if this was the 1st time they had seen each other since Crisis. Immediately after that, the pair would go off screen, and Kid Flash & Flash would come in, do a scene where the pair were seemingly pulling on some type of rope, or other item that can be pulled. Barry then yells out to Oliver that he has a clear shot now. A bit later, there was a scene with Arrow, Flash & Kid Flash standing together in a line (unclear if Diggle was also there, due to equipment impeding parts of the scene). It is unclear what the scene entailed, as they eventually all moved out of my view shortly after. Another scene on the night that was done, is 1 everybody is probably waiting for. The Green Arrow perched on top of a truck, yells out with quite some force "Ramsey Rosso, You Have Failed This City" as he aims his bow, and shoots in to the distance. Later on, they had Stephen and David out on set doing a scene, in it they had Sendhil raised a few feet into the air as Ramsey Rosso. I dont know the full context of it. Thats just what I know was happening. At one point, late in the night, David, Grant, Danielle, and Stephen posed together for a photo (unsure whose phone it was on, but I am sure 1 of them will post it on social media in the not too distant future). I missed that shot, but another photgrapher that was there, was generous enough to lend me 1 of his frames of it. Late in the eevening, myself, and a couple other fans managed to get Keiynan to stop & sign some autographs, and take a photo. It was raining harder then than maybe any other point in the evening. Fortunately, my umbrella did its job & kept them dry. Not long after that, I called it a night, and went home to recoup for the next day. On the 2nd night, they returned to the same location to film more scenes. On this night, I saw far less than the night before. Partially because of where they shot in the courtyard, and partially because of fans the night before ruining the best spot. I had crew tell me on multiple occasions throughout the night, that the reason that 1 of the streets was all blocked off with scrims (the large black tarps they use primarily for lighting, but sometimes privacy) was to stop fans from congrgating there, as the night before they were a constant nuisance to the people working in the tents that were right beside there with all their chatter.
So that misfortune, combined with my physical exhaustion & soreness from the night before, saw me far less motivated on night two. I spent a good chunk of it doing a Live Chat where fans got to see me wish Grant a Happy Birthday in real time near the end of the stream, and socializing with others that came out to the set. Before they started filming, Grant stopped to sign some autographs for myself, and one of the other regulars. He then stopped again later to do photos with people when he wrapped. The early part of the night had Grant, Keiynan, Sendhil, and Stephen on set (I actually never saw David all night, even though his trailer appeared to be in use). For the mostpart, I wasnt able to see a lot, just that most of the action seemed to take place around a towncar. At one point they did a scene with The Flash & Green Arrow seemingly getting up from the ground, but that was really all I could see of the scenes before their lunch break. After lunch, the only scene I saw shot was a stunt scene I had seen breifly being practiced 2 days before, with a bunch of men in SWAT gear attacking the Green Arrow, and he kicking their asses. I called this second night a bit earlier than the first night due to how sore I was after that 1st night, and the fact there seemed to be very little cast left. I actually started on Monday with this set, as it was posted by someone there was a film set at the Vancouver Art Gallery, which is just a few minutes walk from my house. When I got there, I quickly realized it was just set up for the next day. I saw some clear signs immediately it was going to be for The Flash, and sure enough when I got to the courtyard they filmed in, saw two KORD Industries items in there. Of course, I was going to have to wait till the next day to find out what it all meant. Director for this episode is Vanessa Parise (director of 8x14 "Funeral For A Friend"). On set for these scenes were Grant Gustin as The Flash, Candice Patton as Iris West Allen, as well as new addition to the cast, former Continuum, & The 100 actor Richard Harmon, as the Owen Mercer version of Captain Boomerang. When I first got there, the scenes had The Flash standing up on a platform, raised up above the people on the ground. Beside him was a big object, that I later learned was called the "Roemer Accelerator". KORD Industry vehicles can be seen around the set, it appears the device was being transported somewhere, and somehow was prevented from continuing on. The Flash walks over to the device, puts his hands on it, as if to try and stabilize it, eventually seeming to succeed. He then looks down at the ground, where Iris is staring up at him. He then gets off the platform, walks over to her, gives her a hug, and the pair look up at the object. After that, a new person was put up on the raised platform. This time it was Richard as Captain Boomerang. He was standing near the accelerator, at times touching it, but also focusing on The Flash, who was down below with Iris. Captain Boomerangs reason for wanting this device, seems to have something to do with its battery, as he can be seen taking it out of the machine at one point (or putting it in... but I think hes removing it). Last scene before their lunch break had Barry & Iris again on set, seemingly moving towards Captain Boomerang, as Iris was carrying a large gun that has been used on the show in the past (I dont remember if it has a specific name, but I am sure you all do). In 1 take, I noticed Barry put his hand up to his hear like he was getting a message from someone back at S.T.A.R. Labs, but I never noticed it in other takes. So not sure if I just never noticed it before, or if it was an improved take. After the lunch break, it was back to work for Richard & Grant, as Candice left for the day. The scenes continued to have 1 or the other up on the platform. But then at 1 point I noticed in 1 take Boomerang takes out a boomerang and throws it towards Barry. So I went found a different spot, and was able to get a set of photos from the front end of Boomerang throwing them, before the area was cleared out. The pair continued to do parts of this scene for the rest of the day, before the crew & cast wrapped for the day. The last photo in the set is NOT part of the set. It was taped onto the side of 1 of their work carts, and I thought it was interesting. They have filmed close to this same spot before, when I filmed them last season doing a scene with the Godspeeds in the daytime. It also happens to be across the street from where I saw them last about a week and a half ago. On this day, they had the front of the station made to look like "Central City Savings & Loans" bank. Before I get into describing the scene. If you are a regular reader, you know I never ask this, but if you do go to other places of the internet to discuss these photos. PLEASE LINK TO THIS ARTICLE. I went there on crutches with a bad knee, in the rain, on almost no sleep to give you content. I'd like to see the time, and discomfort rewarded. When you just say "credit to Canadagraphs" that doesnt add a lot of views to here. Most people want a direct link. If they have to google where they came from, they generally dont put in the effort. So please link to the article. The first scene of the day had a pair of Central City Police at Central City Savings & Loans confronting currently unknown actor, dressed like a cross between a Stormtrooper, a nordic sniper, and a discount ATOM. They draw their guns on him, and he reacts by putting down his bags he seemingly got from the bank, and walks over & "throws" something, that later on I see is a full police car. He does this, 1 handed, and with almost no effort. The cops scatter, and the villain goes back to his bags. A bit later, the 3 main cast for the day come to work on the scene. Grant Gustin as The Flash, Danielle Nicolet as Cecile Horton, and Kayla Compton as Allegra Garcia showed up to do a scene with the 3 of them confronting this mystery villain. For most of the filming I was unable to see everything going on because of sightlines. But I did get to see a couple takes eventually, and from what I can tell, they are dealing with this guy, Allegra tries to do something to him with her powers, which sends her back, and onto the ground out cold. The villain then confronts Cecile. Cecile seems to go through a variety of emotions, including a point where she grabs her head as if shes having a headache. Barry then eventually zips in (no idea where he was all this time.) Cecile then helps Allegra up, Allegra seems to need Cecile to help hold her up, while Barry taps his ear, as if hes contacting someone probably at S.T.A.R. Labs. Then the scene ends. Grant then left for lunch, while Danielle & Kayla continued doing different angles of the scene that they were in. Eventually they headed to lunch, and I left at that point, as I was physically drained by then, and although I wanted to stick around for the post-lunch scene, which was going to including blowing up that Police car that got "tossed" earlier, I just didnt have it in me to do it. If you are confused on how many you can post, ASK FIRST, and I will let you know. The Flash was on location for the season 8 in an area I shot them just last season, the courtyard in front of the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Last time they were here, it was for a 6 on 1 Godspeed vs Flash battle, that turned into a 6 vs 6 Godspeed battle. This time, no Godspeeds to be seen.... but there was a couple unexpected things. The first scene of the night was a stunt scene, with the double for Danielle Panabaker, as Killer Frost doing a scene where she falls to the ground. Before I saw the stunt woman in her full wardrobe, I thought she had to be another character, because of the hairstyle. But then I saw her up in the air, wearing the full Frost wardrobe, and I was quite confused. In the scene, Frost falls to the ground, and I cant really say if she landed safely, or not.... but based off the next set of scenes they did that night, it seems this fall was not a good one. After the stunt was over, the crew spent quite a while setting up for the next scene, with the stand ins re-enacting the scene that would come up.At the time I did not know who the characters in the scene were going to be, because the 1 double was laying down on the ground ( I was assuming it was Frost based off other facts I knew at the time), and the other was of an older man. While there is no specific requirements for what a stand in has to look like, they generally find someone with a sort of similar look/build. I decided to go walk over to where Danielles trailer was to see if there was any activity going on there to figure out if my hunch of the character on the ground was right, and sure enough moments later she came out to go to set. I chatted with her briefly there, and got her to sign an autograph before she went to set.... and thats when I noticed, HER hair was the same colour as the stunt doubles. Killer Frost has a new hairdo. A bit more time passed, before theyw ere finally ready to do this scene, and I was even more shocked when I saw a man in a red costume with some gold on it, specifically on the boots there. Grant Gustin was on set as The Flash. First time I had seen him since Armageddon, and I wasnt expecting him there, because as I stated earlier, that double, the older man, is NOT the one he has used for the last couple seasons. But now I knew the scene to be Frost on the ground, and The Flash kneeling over top of her checking on her. Unfortunately, the angles for this scene were not great, and I did not get a lot of time to find a good angle, as they only did 2 or 3 takes of the scene, and were done. Grant honestly spent 3X more time hanging around talking with crew, and Danielle before & after the scenes, than actually shooting. That was it for Grants involvement that night.... and they were moving on to the final scene of the night. By the time they set up the 3rd scene of the night, I was really hoping this one wouldnt be long, as I was really cold by then. The final scenes they were going to do for the night, consisted of Danielle (and for a very breif moment, her double) doing a scene with a currently unknown actor (if anyone knows FOR SURE who it is, let me know to credit them properly), in an all grey wardrobe. The whole time I saw him on set, he never took his mask off, so I cant say who it is. I do know, at 1 point in the scene he is wearing something on his chest that seems like a disc of some type, up near his heart. In the scene, Frost gets up off the ground, turns around, walks over to the guy, grabs this disc off his chest, and the grey mystery character does a long drawn out scene of hims seeming to be in pain, or dying from this action, aaaand that was it. When I finally decided to leave, they were still in the process of prepping to do 1 more scene, but it was with the same 2 actors, so I called it a night, and left as I knew there wasnt likely to be time for them to film the scene they were setting up with those 2 at that time, then set up an entirely new scene in teh time they had left to be there. They were filming in the exact same spot I caught them a couple cross overs ago for Elseworlds where Flash & Barry, in opposite costumes, teamed up with Superman & Supergirl to beat Amazo. Last night, the scene only had 2 actors, but the spoiler from it is 1 that has garnered even more attention than I think that 1 did. Grant Gustin as The Flash did a scene with Tony Curran as human form of Despero. In the battle, Grant seems to emerge from out of a cloud of smoke, while Despero is on the ground. At one point Despero does something that causes a car to explode, but much of the fight seems to have Despero on the ground. For once, The Flash seems to have the upper hand. That was all there really was to the scene. I cant recall anything else of note. So thats it for this blog pos..... wait, no, I think I remember something else. Something that definitely stuck out. Yeah yeah, it was also cold out. So cold in fact, that I for once quit earlier than I had planned because I wasnt prepared for the temperature drop there was. So yeah, thats it for this report. I will have more when some more filming happens. Nothing much to this report. Wait, did I... did I forget to mention Barry had a change to his wardrobe? Silly me. Uhhh, yeah, so he had.... GOLD BOOTS! After several seasons of people begging & pleading with the show to give him gold boots, and Eric Wallace specifically stating he would get them eventually, after he "earns them", Barry Allenw as sporting some shiny new boots on set. As soon as I saw them, I shot 1 take of it, and headed immediately home (I actually ran, which I never do, and not for that long of a distance [approx 3 blocks] to get 1 pic of it up on Patreon for everyone..... and its been received very well pretty much everywhere. After catching them at several locations for the penultimate episode (their 150th episode) earlier this month, I wondered if I would see them out for the finale as much. Last 2 nights, I got my first look at them on location for the season 7 finale. As I reported in my 1st report on the finale HERE, The Flash cast & crew were doing scenes around Science World. On this night, they were working on continuations from the night befores big fight. Grant Gustin was there as The Flash, Tom Cavanagh as Reverse Flash, and recently identified by Youtuber Pagey, (and confirmed by me at the set after he told me the name) Karan Oberoi was there as Godspeed. Their stunt doubles were all there too, as you can see from 1 of the photos below where all 6 of them are in 1 shot between takes, but I saw almost no use of them while I was there, only 1 I saw being used was Godspeeds double. Unlike the night prior, these scenes had a different twist on what we were seeing shot the night before. This time, we see Godspeed seemingly beating The Flash again, doing his chest power suction thing, when this time Reverse Flash sneaks up on Godspeed, waits for him to turn around, and stabs him thru the chest with 1 of those mystery green sticks. Godspeed crumples to the ground, seemingly dead. Barry run over to check on him, seeming to show concern for the fallen "god", then yells at Reverse Flash "what have you done?", the pair then stand and have a conversation, Barry obviously looking displeased, while Eobard stood there with an I did what had to be done because you wouldnt feel to his posture. Then we see Thawne try to punch Barry, and Barry dips out of the way (similar to what I saw Mirror Monarch do to him back earlier this season) and as his fist goes by his face, Barry grabs Reverse Flashs arm, and simulates a hip toss, sending Eobard about 60 feet away onto the ground. When he gets up, Barry zips over, and they have ANOTHER conversaiton, where Eobard yells at Barry "I made you", before looking at himself with his arms down in front of him for some reason, then they stand off for a few more seconds (maybe Barry speaks? I didnt have a good view of his side), before Reverse Flash runs off. Barry then turns around, and runs over to the body of Godspeed, and the scene ends. There will be some video from these scenes to post in the next couple weeks, so come back to find those then, or you can subscribe to my Youtube channel and get them there when they drop. The Flash season 7 airs Tuesday nights on The CW in the U.S. Or on their app the next day.
