The Flash cast & crew filmed this past Thursday, into early Friday morning at Science World, in the far north east part of downtown Vancouver. This is for the season 9 finale, the series finale, and the Arrowverse finale. It is directed by Vanessa Parise. This is the same location that they used for the season 7 finale where Godspeed, Reverse Flash, and The Flash had that famous lightning light saber battle. This time, a few more people would be on the set. Early in the day, I got there while they were still setting up. It was going to be cold that night, and I was hoping to get some photos of them rehearsing before it got too cold. Unfortunately, they didnt start rehearsing till it was plenty dark, and already cold. They started with some stunts, featuring the stunt double for Cobalt Blue out on the set. He went up to a car, and shoved it aggressively, which I assume set off the chain reaction that some may have seen in the explosion scene in this video on tiktok. I missed it, as I was across the street in a buddies car getting warm, but we could see it easily enough from the car, as the fireballs were all several feet high, clearing all the equipment that was between us & the set. After they did that explosion scene, there was a scene where someone went through a glass sign (the one I photographed in the daytime), then after cleaning up all that, they started shooting with cast. It was already late & cold by then, and I was only saved by bringing hand warmers with me, and a couple times sitting in a car. Without those, I would have left several hours earlier. On set for this massive scene was several actors, and a couple stunt doubles. First off, people you might have expected to be around. Jessica Parker Kennedy as XS, Kayla Compton as Allegra Garcia, Danielle Nicolet as Cecile Horton, Jon Cor as Chillblaine, aaaaand Danielle Panabaker as Khione. But they were not the only cast out there, there was a roster of speedster villains against them. Rick Cosnett was out there as Cobalt Blue, Teddy Sears was there as Zoom, and a bit of an unexpected shock was Tom Cavanagh back as Reverse Flash, as he had not been announced as being back, unlike the other two. With them were stunt doubles filling the suits of Savitar, and Godspeed. Also on set was Cody Laudan as The Flash. Oddly, Grant Gustin did not work all night (this is quite odd.. only other time I have seen that was one time when Grant got snowed in back east, and 1 other time on another show when an actor got too sick to work on short notice). The scenes did not seem to have a lot in the way of action going on. It essentially had the 5 villains in a row, facing the 6 Team Flash members all standing in a row. It gave us a bit better look at Ceciles costume, which the first set I shot her at, didnt give me the impression the suit was blue, but now I could clearly see it is. Allegra might have had a suit as well, but couldnt be so certain. Khiones wardrobe was seemingly a more toned down old Frost costume, with a more modest look to it. Also, whether you like him or not, you have to give your full respect to Jon Cor as Chillblaine, he was out there SHIRTLESS with his jacket wide open, in below freezing conditions (the temperatures ranged from -1C to -7C on the night) for the scenes. For the most part, the villains team seemed to have Cobalt Blue doing the majority of the dialogue, but it really was hard to be sure, as I was shooting all of it from about a football field away. On Team Flash, I never really got the impression anyone specific was controlling the dialogue there, but again, they had their backs to me for the entire scene. During 1 break, we got to talk to Teddy Sears for a few minutes, while he signed autographs He said he was excited to be back, and thanked all the fans who campaigned for him to return, because he really wanted to come back, and kept checking in with them himself to see if they wanted him to come back, and only got the word about 2 weeks out from filming. I also chatted very briefly with Tom Cavanagh, and finally met Kayla Compton for the 1st time. This MIGHT be the last location shoot the show ever has downtown. They did have another one the very next night, in a city 30 minutes away, that seemed to just be a lot of Godspeeds doing a stunt scene. As of right now, there are no more sets known yet. They only have a week of filming left to do, as they wrap on March 6, 2023. The episode, the penultimate episode of the series, is directed by Stefan Pleszczynski. On this night they filmed 3 different locations in the area. First was across the street at the top of a parking garage. Obviously there was nothing up there that could be seen. I know Grant Gustin was up there as The Flash. I was also told by a crew member that Jessica Parker Kennedy was up there. After that, they moved across the street to film the first location shoot of the night. There were some "future" looking signs like for VR med help, and an automated CC Jitters, implying its in the future. In the scene was Grant & Jessica again as The Flash & XS. In the scene, they had XS trying to make people leave the area for some reason. A few moments later, Flash comes in, looks around, and then runs off with XS. A pretty anti-climactic scene over all. A bit later, they moved down to the a street that is used a lot. On this night, they had it dressed up to look like Porter Plaza, a location they have been to before here. Grant & Jessica were down there as well as Flash & XS, but they were joined by 1 other cast member, Danielle Nicolet was down there. I assume as Cecile Horton, but..... something was different. The "muscle" of Team Flash was there in what seemed like a head to toe leather outfit.... and a mask. Yep, Ceciles wardrobe has.... levelled up. Earlier in the evening they did a stunt with Grants double, Cody falling from a high height onto a pile of mats. A bit later, Grant took over from the stunt doubles spot, in the classic default starting position of The Flash, laying on the ground. A scene with XS coming in and seemingly throwing something in the direction of where Flash would have been was a bit hard to see, I was too far away, with too much equipment in the way to see if it was at him, or past him. After that, a scene with Cecile coming in, and walking up to Flash on the ground, putting out her hand, and lifting the scarlet speedster off the ground. After that, I called it a night, even though they had a bit more time left to film. It was cold, and long day, so I decided to call it there. Funny enough, I didnt even know about the Cecile mask till I got home and looked at the photos a bit. I was so unsure at what I saw, I lightened the photo to make sure I saw what I saw. Thats why the 1 photo looks so light. The Flash cast & crew filmed scenes on Friday in downtown Vancouver as part of their 3 day shoot in the downtown area. My other previous finale set blog posts are HERE and HERE. On set for these scenes were Grant Gustin as The Flash, Tom Cavanagh as Eobard Thawne, Jessica Parker Kennedy as XS, Jordan Fisher as Impulse, and Kausar Mohammed as Fast Track. Scenes on this night had the 4 hero speedsters facing off against Thawne in a cased in courtyard with extras running around a little bit early on in the scene. Eventually the 4 heroes confront Thawne, and XS yells out at him "its 4 against 1 Thawne". Then shortly after the 4 heroes zip out of frame. A bit later they do more of the scene, with Thawne standing in the middle looking around, as if he is unsure where an attack might be coming from, then they pause, the 4 heroes come in & all make a throwing action at him simultaneously, hitting Thawne, sending him to the ground. Then there is another pause with Flash & Flast Track standing over the body of Thawne, and Tom gets up and leaves the scene, and Jordan comes in & takes his place, then they unpause, and Flash, XS & Fast Track hurry over to the body of Impulse now laying on the ground. Another pause, Thawne comes back in, this time behind them. The trio turn around to see Thawne there, then there is another pause, and everyone leaves except Flash & Thawne, they have a few words, before Flash runs after Thawne, and thats the end of the scene. After that, they went on lunch, I called it a day, and thus, also called it a season on The Flash as this was the last public location shoot for them this season. They officially wrap the entire season on Monday April 25th. The Flash cast & crew filmed scenes earlier this week in downtown Vancouver for 3 nights. This blog post is just for the 1st two nights. This was for the season 8 finale, episode 820. The production closed down 1 whole block in front of our hockey arena, Rogers Arena. Along with that, at other points of the shoot, they had a couple other roads completely blocked off to traffic & pedestrians. On Wednesday night, in continual rain, the cast & crew shot scenes with Grant Gustin as The Flash, and Tom Cavanagh as some version of Eobard Thawne (he was referred to as "NRF" on a storyboard I happened to see for 1 of the scenes). In the scene, the 2 are having an altercation in a parking lot, when Barry seems to get frozen, as if he is in Flashtime, and Thoawne walks around him acting all boastful, a Police Car zips in during in (why it wasnt also frozen.... thats for the writers to explain) and Thawne blows it up. All the while, Barry is frozen still in a defensive pose. I also saw 1 scene they did a couple takes of where Barry just comes running into the parking lot from the street, and that was about all there was on that night that I saw. On Thursday night I got down the set a little later than the night before, knowing this time it was going to be a full night shoot. When I got there, it was clear they were planning to do a different stunt at some point, as they had a crane set up to lift someone in the sky. For the 1st couple hours, nothing much happened, except getting the stunt team prepped to do a stunt. At 1 point they did a stunt where the doubles for Flash & Thawne are thrown into the air in opposite directions (I missed it somehow, but you can find it on twitter HERE.). I saw them working on 1 stunt where they were raising the Thawne double high into the air. Unfortunately, a random lightning strike paused their work on that stunt, and the whole production shut down for about 45-60 minutes while they waited to make sure there was not more troublesome weather. By they time they were getting ready to work again, I had gotten tired, cold, and sore enough to consider leaving, and had decided next train I saw coming in, I was taking it. While I was waiting, they called 1st team rehearsals, which I thought was odd, since it was clearly the stunt team working last I saw. Instead of just stunts now though, they had cast on set. Grant Gustin was laying down in the middle of the road, he had his rain gear on over his costume, so there was no identifying markings it was him, except the gold boots. At 1st I thought it might be him because I thought I saw gold boots. But when I looked at the person laying on the ground, I couldnt see any of the boots, and assumed it was a random Cop from the blown up CCPD car maybe because of the all black outfit he was wearing. I was again, about to leave, when I saw something I wasnt expecting to see. A man in blue pants, red jacket, wearing a big metal brimmed hat go running into the street with a woman. I grabbed my binoculars again, looked and confirmed what I thought I was seeing, it was John Wesley Shipp & Candice Patton. Suddenly I realized that WAS Grant in the middle of the road, and I hurried over to a better spot to start shooting. They packed a lot of parts of scenes into the time I was there, trying to make up for the hour they had to shut down. Inside the parking lot, they had Thawne looking all menacing facing Barry, while Iris & Jay Garrick were standing 15 feet away from them. Iris yells "Flash, you have to stop". Iris holding her head at times. Next they are out on the street. Out there Iris & Jay find Barry, on the ground, just starting to get up. Barry & Iris hug for a long period, before Jay rushes Iris out of there after Barry says something to them. They then had 3 speedsters join Barry, Jessica Parker Kennedy as XS, Jordan Fisher as Impulse, and Kausar Mohammed as Fast Track, with a new cowl, joined the Scarlet Speedster. Barrys kids rush over to hug their dad, as Fast Track stands near by. They then have their moment broken up by something in the sky that they all turn to look up at. A bit later, they finally did the stunt with the Thawne double high in the air. Barry is sitting on the ground, against the building and is yelling at him while Thawne is making lots of "aggghhh" type sounds with his arms stretched out. At 2 points, he makes a clap, before going back into the arms stretched out point. aaaannd that was it for these 2 nights in the parking lot. There was 1 more location shoot the next night, that I will have a blog up for in the next couple days. The Flash seemingly was impossible to find after episode 6 of this season..... till last couple weeks, when the show has been found downtown 3 times now in the last few weeks. This time, the cast & crew were in Harbour Green Park. This is a location thats been used a few times by The Flash, as well as other Arrowverse shows (most recently where Mary gets grabbed by the vine in Batwoman, and some of the Supergirl finale filming). On this day, the crew were filming episode 8x15, directed by The Flash show runner Eric Wallace. They set up several glowing green rods in the park in a circle. The scene, which included Grant Gustin as Barry Allen in his Flash wardrobe, did a scene with a returning recurring character Christian Magby, as Deon Owens, aka Still Force. The scene has the pair doing a walk through the park. At one point, they both stop to turn and stare at a couple that walk by, before continuing on their walk. After the round a corner, they come to a bench, where a newspaper is sitting on it. Barry picks it up, takes a very quick glance at it before starting to put it back down.... then stops short of putting it back down, pulls it back up to his face and reads it more, and in more detail with Deon there beside him looking at it. He then puts the paper down, and him & Deon continue their walk before Deon stops him and they have a bit of a talk for a few moments. Then Barry pulls out a device, they both stare at it, before continuing on more. After that, they wrapped Christian, and had Grant do 1 or 2 quick takes of him standing up on a ledge so they could shoot him looking up at him while he held the newspaper, maybe to get the underside of the newspaper? Then he wrapped at that location, and the crew started to move out. I know more than a few people have seen photos of the 1 newpaper headline about Zoom & Godspeed. The props person had 2 different papers in his pack. One with that headline, 1 about the STAR Labs explosion. I dont really know what one was on the bench for the scene, or if they alternated them. But the props person was carrying around both of them, suggesting they were both in use there. During the day, unfortunately, this location was across the street from an ESL school, and they had not one, or even 2, but at least 4 that I saw, attempts by kids from the school trying to rush the set to meet Grant. Some got through, and unfortunately were rewarded for their ignorance. At one point over 20 kids tried getting onto the set, with only 6 or 8 of them succeeding before crew stopped the rest. It didnt just go to the invasion of the set. A group of 10-12 were hanging around Grants trailer, and when he came out to go to set one time, they asked him for a photo, he 2 or 3 times told them he cant that he was on his way to set, but they whined so much that he bit his lip, ran over to them to quickly do 1 group photo, then had to literally sprint to the set. I havent seen a set with so many issues like this in a few years. While I am sure some people will see it as "Grant is so nice to stop for them even when he knows they are being a problem", there is the other side where him accommodating them over & over again gives them, and their friends that didnt get a chance on that day, the impression that is acceptable, and will only do it again at future sets, as I said, its a commonly used area. Later in the evening, the crew moved 4 or 5 blocks up the street for a night shoot. Unfortunately I was too wiped out from my day at the daytime shoot to wait it out, but it looked like it was going to have a stunt of someone falling, as there was a crane in the alley. There was also a trailer for XS (Nora West Allen, played by Jessica Parker Kennedy) at the set, along with a trailer Grant frequently uses (although earlier set he was using a different trailer). A little something about the spot they are filming..... it is the same spot where Flash & Pied Piper beat Godspeed in 6x18. With Godspeeds name on that newspaper from earlier in the days shoot, could this be a re-imagined version of this scene? The Flash was on location for the season 8 in an area I have never seen anyone filming in previously in the downtown core, which is pretty rare (someone may have been there before, I personally just didnt know about it). At the beginning, they had Jesse L Martin as Joe West there doing a scene with someone we heard was coming back (if you keep your ear to the ground on what main websites were posting about the show) Rick Cosnett was back as Eddie Thawne. To begin, they rush in to the area in their police car. Then Eddie goes running off with his gun out, while Joe stays behind. In their scene, a man comes out of a jewellery store just covered in jewellery. Joe & the crook then have a stand off, where the crook tells Joe he has a real gun with real bullets, while Eddie was off to the side hiding behind a tree. Then 2 more characters come in. Jordan Fisher as Bart Allen, and Jessica Parker Kennedy as Nora West Allen show up. Something startles them. They then have a debate about what to do. Then Jordan rushes in, and does something to the crook that takes the gun out of his hands, and Joe goes over and arrests the guy, and Eddie comes in to collect the gun off the ground. That was more or less everything they shot. Because of the order they shot, and angles they shot.... I dont really know the exact point where pieces overlapped. At the end of my time there, they shot 1 more scene with a mystery woman (I thought at 1st it could be Britnie Oldford as Peek-A-Boo... but wasnt 100% sure. Kinda dont think it is though.) standing behind a car with a couple other people. Only reason I dont think she was an extra is because main hair & make up team worked on her, and she had a costumes jacket for the weather. The director is Eric Dean Seaton, he directed the The Exorcism Of Nash Wells episode last season. This is also the 150th episode for the series. There was 2 parts to this blog... if you saw the 1st set of photos previously & think you saw everything in here already, there is a 2nd set of photos at the bottom that were added later. At this 2nd location, they had Grant Gustin as The Flash, Jessica Parker Kennedy as XS, and Jordan Fisher as Impulse, all on location again with 6 Godspeeds. The scene was vaguely similar to the episode 7x15 set I shot a few weeks ago, except this time Barrys kids were beside him to witness the insanity. The 6 Godspeed clones all seemed to be fighting each other, while the trio of heroes stood, and watched them do it.... then, the trio ran off in different directions. That was it. The last location of the day took place a block away at (report coming as soon as I have the photos edited) an area they have used a fair bit this season (not exactly where they were, but that general block), in front of the new Parq Hotel, The Douglas Hotel, and the new casino that are at the back of B.C. Place Stadium. With these businesses all either closed, or at severe reduced capacity, it was easy for the to get permission to use this street on a Friday afternoon. The Douglas was dressed up to say "CC CITIZEN MEDIA", The entrance for the casino said "Powers Technology" which in the comics is a rival of Wayne Enterprises, and the Parq Hotel said "Goode World Studios", which is a reference to te Young Justice animated series, where that company exists. On set for this scene was Jordan Fisher as Bart Allen / Impulse, and Jessica Parker Kennedy as Nora West Allen / XS. The scene I saw shot was a little complicated to follow because of the way they were chopping it up into small parts for the filming. From what I can sort of piece together.... Godspeed is looking menacing, arms up in the air, then ends up getting KO'ed. Then both Godspeed & XS are on the ground (so was XS on the ground all along, and the camera didnt see it the way they were filming?). At some point XS gets up, and then Godspeed sits up does something with his arm that seems like maybe hes trying to make 1 last attempt to do something, before falling back down. Somewhere mixed in all of this is Impulse letting out a couple really loud "Woooo" sounds, and then we see XS & Impulse having a talk with Godspeed out cold behind them. Bart is all happy & seems like hes trying to tell Nora its all good, while Nora seems to be telling him something in a more stern "take this serious" tone. They then look back at the Godspeed on the ground, go back to their convo, then turn around again, and he isnt there. They then walk a bit towards where he should have been, and that was the end of the scene. Just before I left, they were prepping to do stunts with Noras stunt double, I am assuming that was going to be the part where Nora also ends up down and out on the ground with Godspeed that I saw the after result of. There was a scene earlier in the day, that set report is HERE There will be some video from these scenes to post in the next couple weeks, so come back to find those then, or you can subscribe to my Youtube channel and get them there when they drop.
